Taiwan to Install LED streetlights to Stimulate Its Economy

Recently, part of Taiwan's economic stimulus package announced to install 320,000 LED streetlights on the island, as one of a series of measures introduced by vice premier Sean Chen to boost high-tech industry. Datas show that Taiwan's economy grew over 10% last year with 13% growth in exports but it's looking at 4% growth next year with growth in exports of only 5.3% - if the stimulus succeeds. Recently,Everlight has taken an active action on fighting a lawsuit against Nichia in Tokyo District Court and said it will unfold the legal action by bringing the patent suits to other countries to counter Nichia’s repeated accusations that Everlight infringes on its patents. Salina City Commissioners are considering about exploring the possibility of lights replacement in downtown Salina. Commissioners were updated on the project, which is still in the conceptual stage, during a study session on Monday. Vancouver and nearby Langley in southwestern Canada is to install Korean-made LED lamps in February, next year after the certification process. According to the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, Yuyang DNU, a Korean LED producer, will supply 20 units of 50-watt and 80-watt lights without charge to the two cities for a test operation. The City of Robertsdale Acquires DOE’s Grant for LED Streetlights Retrofit

The city of Robertsdale received a $100,000 grant from the U.S. DOE to replace 120 streetlights with LEDs between Central Baldwin Middle School and Baldwin County 48. The money was provided by the U.S. Department of Energy. According to Greg Smith, city engineer ,the power cost for one of the fixtures now on the highway is about $120.90 a year. The bulbs last for about 22,000 hours. Recently, Chien Fu Shieh, the Chairman of LED sapphire substrate manufacturer Tera Xtal(4969), revealed that the company plans to establish crystal-growing and substrate plants in China.
