Formosa Epitaxy's MOCVD would be equipped 126 units in 2011

Recently, Formosa Epitaxy announced the inauguration of its LED chip subsidiary based in Yangzhou, China, which could become China's largest epitaxial wafer maker in 2012 when it completed the installation of 50 MOCVD machines. Formosa Epitaxy chairman noted, the company expected LED chip demand return to the levels of the first half of 2010 in February and March of 2011, and mass shipments for applications in tablet PCs would begin in February as well.

Piccadilly Circus Gets LED Makeover

TDK has used LED technology to upgrade its iconic neon sign at London’s Piccadilly Circus. The LED display which nearly has 100 square metres was jointly created by Barco, project management company MT² and system integrator Beaver Solutions. Barco’s 16mm TF-16BK LED tiles were used for the display. A web-based Scala content management system, supplied by Beaver was also used in the sign.

Haifa of Israel Created an Eco-friendly LED Tree to Celebrate Christmas

Haifa, the third largest city of Israel has created an eco-friendly tree to celebrate this Christmas in the city’s center. Created by Israeli designer Hadas Itzcovitch and her father, artist Ernest Itzcovitch, the new 38-foot Christmas tree made entirely of 5,480 recycled water bottles and other plastic objects donated by its residents and illuminated by LED-certified lights , to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Renesas Electronics’ R2A20134 LED Driver IC

Renesas Electronics America has released its R2A20134 LED driver IC which can supply high efficiency and a high power factor at low cost for LED lighting applications.   Renesas Electronics’ voltage step-down control technology (single-stage) provides a high line-to-ground voltage. Besides, the ability to select low-voltage MOSFETs (voltage tolerance of only 500 volts (V) to 300 V, rather than the typical 700 V) further contributes to lower system cost.

Epistar、 Formosa and Everlight’s employee bonuses was expected to increase compared to 2009

The full-year revenues for Taiwan-based LED chip maker Epistar was expected to reach NT$20 billion in 2010, up 50% compared to 2009. And Net income for 2010 will range from NT$5.5-6 billion. Meanwhile, the company would take NT$800 million for the employee bonuses, and everyone would receive over NT$200,000 on average, with 3,700 employees. Also, Epistar planed to raise salaries by 8% on average.

African Standard Bank’s LED Retrofit Project in Tanzania

According to a statement from African Standard Bank, it has bought 700,000 UN-backed carbon credits to fund a clean energy project to replace kerosene lamps with LED lamps in 31-million Tanzanian homes. The project, owned by Illumination Tanzania, will save the nation around $200 million (about Sh280 billion). And it will reduce Tanzania’s greenhouse gas emissions by 800,000 tonnes.
