IQE subsidiary NanoGaN has acquired two separate patents, patent 2008-549935 granted by the Japan Patent Office and patent No.2446471 granted by the UK patent office for its nanocolumn technology. The title of patent 2008-549935 is: "growth method using nanostructure compliant layers and HVPE for producing high quality compound semiconductor materials."This patent protects the Group's proprietary nanocolumn technology for producing high quality, free-standing gallium nitride substrates.

Philips Lumileds Crosses 1 Billion LUXEON LED Benchmark

Philips Lumileds announced that it shipped its billionth LUXEON power LED in the 2nd quarter of 2010. The company’s capacity and infrastructure investments over the last several years have enabled it to meet customer needs for high volumes of products, with the company delivering over 750 million LUXEON power LEDs in the past two years to automotive, illumination and consumer electronics customers.

AIXTRON’s Next Generation MOCVD tools to fill Sanan´s Wuhu fab

AIXTRON AG today signed a contract with Sanan Optoelectronics Co. Ltd., on the supply of a double digit number of multiple CRIUS® II and AIX G5 MOCVD systems. The AIXTRON new generation MOCVD systems will be delivered between the fourth quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 and installed at Sanan’s new manufacturing facilities in Wuhu, Anhui, China. Earlier this year Sanan had announced their plans to invest into China’s largest LED manufacturing and research centre capable of operating up to 200 MOCVD systems.

Boost brightness in Topco Energy Saving System's monthly shipments

After shipping 50,000-60,000 units in May, the number of Topco Energy Saving System's shipments for July is expected to be 100,000. According to the firm, its current monthly revenues have already surpassed its 2009 full-year revenues of NT$30 million (US$936,227). It has already entered Japan's LED lighting market in the first quarter of 2010, and has intended to expand its sales channels for further development in Japan. In addition, a major Japan-based distributor recently became a shareholder.

Semtech launched its first 10-channel white LED driver

Semtech Corp. launched its first 10-channel white LED driver SC442 in Ultra-Small, Low-Profile 4x4x0.6mm Package, with an integrated 3A boost power switch to satisfy space constrained LED backlights serving LCD monitors and LCD-TVs as well as ultra-bright displays. The device can drive up to 120 LEDs at up to 30mA per channel and it operates across a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 21V for use with lithium ion battery packs or regulated 5V, 12V or 18V power supplies.

Analog Devices ADP1650 white LED driver available for camera phones

To use the limited battery current available for flash, Analog Devices, Inc. has designed ADP1650 white LED driver, which features a programmable I²C-compatible interface, programmable torch and flash currents for one LED up to 1500mA, two independent TxMASK inputs and a 4-bit ADC. It can provide high efficiency at 85% at the typical battery voltage (90% peak). The ultra-compact ADP1650 measures only 2 × 1.5mm in a 12-ball WLCSP package and reduces PCB requirements.

Toshiba announced E-Core series of LED street lamps

Toshiba announced its E-Core series of LED street lamps, a 400W mercury lamp or a 180W high-pressure sodium lamp. It is possible to realize an average road luminance of 1.0cd/m2 with an average power consumption of 122W (when input is 200V) by using these lamps. The power consumptions of street lamps using a 400W mercury lamp (KSC-4) are 415W and a 180W high-pressure sodium lamp (KSH-2) are 195W.

Topco Energy Saving System schedules to achieve a 20% share of the Japanese market for LED bulbs this year. According to Sunny Tsai , the company president ,the firm with 90% of its sales generated in Japan, has shipped over 100,000 LED bulbs to the country in July alone. What's more, it looks to achieve single-month shipment of over 500,000 units during the Christmas sales season. The firm has commanded an 11% share of the segment in Japan with 6W LED bulbs priced at only NT$349.

AIXTRON announced the financial results for the first half of 2010

AIXTRON did the positive business performance in H1/2010 due to the continuing healthy demand, beneficial volume effects, and a stronger US Dollar. Firstly, compared to H1/2009, the gross margin in H1/2010 was 10 percentage points higher at 53%. The H1/2010 operating result increased year on year by 769% to EUR 106.9m with a 19 percentage points higher EBIT margin of 31%, leading to a net result of EUR 74.1m or 21% return on sales. The H1/2010 net income was 742% up year on year.
