Taiwan`s major LED chipmakers ,such as Epistar Corp., Formosa Epitaxy Inc. , Genesis Photonics Inc., Lextar Electronics Corp., are expanding output to meet the LED supply explosively increasing supply challenge this year. Epistar Corp., has agreed private placements of less than 300 million shares, hoping raise nearly NT$26 billion in cash.

Tekcore Co., Ltd., Genesis Photonics Inc., and Lextar Electronics Corp. launched over NT$11.3 billion expansion plans, which came from syndicated loans. Among the loan, Genesis received NT$1.5 billion from 12 banks, Tekcore secured a loan of NT$1.8 billion with Chang Hwa Bank, and 8 banks agreed to lend NT$8 billion to Lextar.

TSMC will set up a PV Cell Factory in Central Taiwan

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) will in partnership with Stion Corp. of the United States to set up a factory in the Central Taiwan Science Park to produce CuInGaSe2-based (CIGS-based) thin-film solar cells. In this factory, Stion will transfer its CuInGaSe2 (CIGS) PV technology to TSMC in exchange for No.1 pure silicon foundry's pledge to supply it solar cells using the technology.

Bright LED made a deal with a Beijing-headquartered state-run corporation for LED billboards measuring 1,400 square meters. It’s estimated RMB17 million. According to the company’s chairman, J.R. Liao, the company`s revenue for May set a new high of NT$523 million. And it estimated the revenue for June will reach NT$600 million and for the entire year to top NT$6 billion.

Bridgelux increased its neutral white LEDs to 3,400 lm

Bridgelux released neutral white versions of ES and RS LEDs, with a colour temperature of 4,100K. ES devices offer 400, 800 and 1,200 lm, while RS device delivers add up to 3,400 lm, expanding the existing 3,100 lm warm white and 4,500 lm cool white RS range. ES and RS LEDs are square: respectively 25 and 50mm across. There is also a 'star' version of ES.RS devices operate at 2.1A with a forward voltage of 26V.

Osram Sylvania will introduce LED lamp to take a share of the market in August. The lamp uses 12 watts, 80 percent less electricity than the standard 60-watt incandescent, and emits nearly as much light. It's supposed to last 25,000 hours.

Avago's new 15° and 30° viewing angle LED lamps

Avago produced HLMP-Ex1A/1B-xxxDV (15°) and HLMP-Ex3A/3B-xxxDV (30°) to follow the European Standard EN 12966-1 for variable message traffic signs. And they are Pb-free and RoHS-6 compliant. These 5mm extra bright LEDs are available in red and amber colors. The maximum LED junction temperature limit of +130°C makes high temperature operation in bright sunlight conditions possible. To reduce the effects of long term exposure to direct sunlight, the lamp epoxy uses UV inhibitors.

Vizio provided some details on its 2010 3D TVs, including showing the first 3D model for the U.S. market to offer passive glasses technology.
