Osram lights up cruise ship Aidastella

Osram illuminates the tenth cruise ship of Aida fleet with 9,000 lamps and a “strip” of more than 1 kilometers of LEDs. Aidastella, also called "the swimming city," has a total length of 253 meters and a width of 32 meters, and offers space for 1097 passengers. "Cruise ships with their complex range of demands are in reality lighthouses for lighting applications," commented Martin Nüboldt, manager of the lighting project from Osram. "As one of the leading providers of maritime lighting, we are highly pleased to provide lighting fixtures for Aidastella."

The ship was inaugurated with the name of “Aidastella” in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany on 16 March 2013; it is the tenth ship of Aida fleet. In order to lighten the star (in Latin, stella) and represent its own brilliance, Aidastella equipped with various kind of lights suitable to different places: 9,000 Osram halogen Eco lamps and 1,200 meters of flexible LED modules to ensure both white and colored light. All these fixtures can work much longer than traditional standard bulbs such as incandescent lamps. No matter it is for passenger cabins, bar areas or hallways, the lighting on this cruise does not only emphasize a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere, but also helps guests feel as if they are at home.

Energy efficiency, adequacy and beauty

Cruise ships need adequate lighting. On one hand, it is necessary to save as much energy as possible; on the other hand, designers of ships have to install as many lighting fixtures as they can in such a restricted space. To develop good surroundings and proper atmosphere, it is also important to use correct lighting in cabins and all public areas including restaurants, bars, shops and wellness areas. When cruising, power is generated by the ship itself, so consuming energy efficiently is undoubtedly required. A Hamburg-based company Partner Ship Design did the interior design of Aidastella, and the lighting plan was organized by Lichtvision. The cruise was built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg.

Osram supplies innovative products and lighting solutions for many places including lounges and football arenas, and also introduces the concept of sustainability. Last fiscal year, more than 70% revenue came from Osram’s energy-efficient products and solutions. Artificial lighting consumes around 20% of global power and hence emits a large amount of carbon dioxide. In order to avoid severe environmental problems, it is becoming more important to come up with new ideas when we build any energy consumption vehicles.
