Ushio Introduces New Single-mode 670 nm Red Laser Diodes

Ushio announced the initiation of its new laser diodes mass production. The new products HL67191MG and HL67192MG offer operation at the 670 nm wavelength. Providing an optical output power of 15 mW (CW) and 30 mW (pulsed), these single-mode LDs deliver high-temperature performance (up to 70°C) within a φ5.6 mm package. Both LDs achieve a low operating current of 30 mA at 25°C (15 mW in CW operation) and feature built-in monitoring photodiodes. Osram Opto Raises Laser Output Power by 10% in Lab

Osram Opto Semiconductors has produced a broad area laser diode with a lateral brilliance of up to 4.8 W/(mm*mrad) in the laboratory. The more brilliant the laser, the more efficiently it can inject its light into optical fibers. This then increases the output power of modules for pumping fiber lasers used for material processing. This progress is one of the results of the project “Integrated microoptical and microthermal elements for diode lasers of high brilliance” (IMOTHEB) which was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and which has now been successfully completed.

Laser Diode from Osram Simplifies Fiber-coupled Systems

With its SPL BF98-40-5 laser bar Osram Opto Semiconductors has succeeded in combining power and beam quality like never before. Thanks to its high brilliance, the laser diode considerably reduces the complexity of coupling light into fibers. Diode or fiber laser systems for material processing can be made simpler and therefore more cost-effective. Even at its maximum output of more than 60 watts the component has an impressively long life.

LED Nobel Illuminates Pioneering GE Research

Last October, the biologist and former GE Healthcare chief scientist James Rothman received the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for solving the mystery of how cells shuttle molecules of insulin and other substances to the right place in the body. This year, two other former GE scientists looking for new sources of light, Bob Hall and Nick Holonyak Jr., almost felt the glow of a Nobel themselves.

Osram Creates a Milestone with Laser Diodes for Projectors

For the first time there is a compact laser multi-chip package. Osram Opto Semiconductors can pack up to 20 blue laser chips in the new PLPM4 450 module. Instead of taking the laborious approach and constructing a light source from individual laser diodes, it is now possible to reduce the complexity of laser projectors significantly. Developers also succeeded in doubling the optical output of the individual chips, with the result that the new laser module now offers an overall output of 50 W. This means that professional laser projectors can achieve a brightness level of more than 2000 lumen with only one component.
