Epistar Corp. and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) Board of Directors held simultaneous meetings to approve the sale of all shares of TMSC Solid State Lighting (TSMC SSL)  to Epistar at NT$ 1.46 per share, with the total price amounts to NT$ 825 million. Epistar will control 94% of TSMC SSL holdings after this acquisition. TSMC Solid State Lighting has LM-80 testing lab accreditation

TSMC Solid State Lighting (TSMC SSL) announced today that its laboratory was accredited as a LM-80 qualified lab by Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF). At the same time, all of its LED product series have been tested in the lab and will be qualified per LM-80 testing practice.  LM-80 is the most well known qualification method for lumen maintenance test of  LED devices across the industry. TSMC Likely to Receive LED Patents License From Philips

It's said that Taiwan silicon foundry giant Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) will license LED patents from Philips when its LED factory starts pilot production at the end of 2010. According to the company, it began the construction in March 2010, with first-phase project scheduled to be completed and tooled by the end of 2010 at a cost of around NT$5.5 billion (US$177 million). TSMC to invest US$319.6 million for developing new businesses

According to the executive of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), TSMC will hire 500-600 staff, mostly R&D-focused engineers, for the construction of a new fab at the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) to produce thin-film solar PV modules, with volume production expected to kick off in 2011. Recently, for the new businesses, TSMC's board of directors decided to invest US$319.6 million. Construction on the facility began in March, and the equipment move-in for its LED fab at the Hsinchu Science Park on schedule of September.

Recently, Silicon foundry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) has taken a big step in the LED arena. TSMC is looking at the energy sector for good reason. On Tuesday (Nov. 10), TSMC has approved capital appropriations of $46 million to set up a production line and product development lab for solid state lighting. This implies that it is looking at LED production. It is unclear if TSMC (Hsinchu) will devise LEDs on a foundry basis. The company did not elaborate on its intentions.

NT$26 million (US$764,700) through its venture capital fund VTFA and has acquired 11% stake in the LED provider. The investment is considered as part of its plan to develop strong presence in green technology field. Liquidleds was co-founded in 2005 by a former iD SoftCapital Group executive.
