The United States has first OLED pilot manufacturing site

Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reported that Canandaigua in New York was the first OLED pilot manufacturing site in USA. The pilot line occupied 140,000-square-foot area. The Universal Display Corporation (UDC) who had been given $4 million by DOE was a member of the OLED pilot project. Also, UDC, MBT, New York’s Smart System Technology & Commercialization Center (STC) were partners on the project, which leverages an $11.5 million investment from MBT, state government incentives available through the STC, and municipal tax credits.

TESS changes its company name to Top Energy Saving System Corp.

TESS, a Taiwan-based LED lighting leading brand, changed its company name from “topco energy saving system corp.” to “Top Energy Saving System Corp.” As TESS is planning an IPO in Taiwan this year, this name change is carried out in order to avoid public confusion between TESS and other similar company names. The brand name, TESS, remains the same. The new company name, Top Energy Saving System Corp., has been changed under the approval of at the shareholder meeting.

LED enterprises together test LED street lamps

It is reported that Taiwan and China vendors will test LED street lamps in Xiamen, Fujian Province and Guangzhou, by cross-strait standards for LED street lighting. Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) will assist to choose test sites, and two test sites have chosen, including Xiamen's Huoju Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone and line one of Guangzhou's Metro subway system.

Wellypower paid attention to consumer lighting market

Recently, CCFL lighting maker Wellypower Optronics reported hot cathode fluorescent lamps (HCFL) T5 light bars, in order to pay attention to consumer lighting market. Now, Wellypower had both contract manufacturing and own brand operations. Every moth, the company could produce 1.4-1.8 million units, which utilization efficiency was 70-80%, and package 120 million units, which may increase 200 million units by the end of 2010.

TSMC Likely to Receive LED Patents License From Philips

It's said that Taiwan silicon foundry giant Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) will license LED patents from Philips when its LED factory starts pilot production at the end of 2010. According to the company, it began the construction in March 2010, with first-phase project scheduled to be completed and tooled by the end of 2010 at a cost of around NT$5.5 billion (US$177 million). Volume production will not kick off until Q1 of 2011.

Taiwan LED Industry to Retain its Top Ranking in Global Market

Based on a continuing influx of fresh funds, Taiwan is expected to keep its lead in the global rush toward the LED market in the coming years. According to Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), the total investment in the Taiwanese LED industry will top US$600 million in 2010, the largest amount in the world. Some heavyweight electronic firms such as the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), AU Optronics, and Chimei Innolux Corp. are steping into the LED sector.

Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs Launched an Intelligent-Control System to Promote Green Power

According to the report of CNA, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) invested NT$18 million (US$586,800) to install more than 500 intelligent LED street lamps in three major parking lots in Sanchong City, Taiwan County, with the aim of cutting electricity consumption by at least 70% to promote green power. According to MOEA officials, the intelligent system will adjust the intensity of the lights by detecting the level of usage, such as the presence of pedestrians or vehicles, and thus reduce electricity consumption.

GE's LED Products Helps to Cut The Cost of The Chips Used in The Bulbs

According to the division's chief of General Electric, its lighting unit may draw as much as 75 percent of sales from LED products within the next decade, compared with less than 10 percent now, which means rising competition among GE suppliers is helping cut the cost of the chips used in the bulbs.   It's said that U.S. legislation will bring an end to production of the 100-watt incandescent bulb in 2012, prompting consumers to switch to other types including halogen and compact fluorescents. Lower-wattage incandescent bulbs will be phased out later.
