Revolution Lighting Technologies , a leader in advanced LED lighting technology solutions, today announced that its operating division, Energy Source, recently completed two lighting retrofit projects, installing high efficiency LED lighting and control systems, totaling more than $4.75 million. Acquired by RVLT in August, Energy Source, LLC is a provider of turnkey energy savings solutions for LED lighting for the commercial, industrial, hospitality, retail, education, and municipal sectors.

Following Osram’s announcement last week that the company is to invest EUR 1 billion in a new Malaysia-based plant for LED chips, a leading investor in Osram expressed opposing opinions about Osram’s latest strategy, reported Reuters.

Noise is an issue in optical telecommunications. And findings means of controlling noise is key to physicists investigating light-emitting diodes or lasers. Now, an Italo-Iraqi team has worked on a particular type of light source, called the quantum dot light-emitting diode (QDLED). In a study published in EPJ D, Kais Al Namee from the National Institute of Optics, in Florence, Italy and colleagues, demonstrate that modulating bias current of the QDLED could lead to countering the noise. This, in turn, leads to stabilising such light sources, making them better suited for optical telecommunications.

Oversupply situations in the LED chip sector, and fierce competition in the general lighting sector over the past few years has aggravated the pricing situation in 2015. White LED chip prices for the large part have reflected a consistent downtrend over the past few years. China’s ecommerce giants announced their breaking revenue results for Single’s Day on Nov. 12, 2015. The country’s online total revenue on the anti-Valentines day, commonly known as Single’s Day to locals, soared 52.7% to reach RMB 122.94 billion (US $19.29 billion), compared to last year’s RMB 80.5 billion according to data compiled by Syntun. Osram, a global leader of lighting manufacturer based in Germany recently announced an additional investment of EUR 3 billion (US $3.24 billion) by the year 2020, in line of becoming a semiconductor company following the planned disposal of its traditional lamps and light bulbs business.. The additional investments comprised of EUR 1 billion for the construction of a new light emitting diode (LED) chip plant in Kulim, Malaysia. The new plant will be the largest and latest 6-inch LED chip production site worldwide. The balance EUR 2 billion will be invested in research and development (R&D) for the Osram Group globally.

Telensa, which provides end-to-end smart city solutions using its low power UNB wireless technology, has announced that a major new deployment is underway covering 33,000 LED streetlights in Doncaster, UK. The deployment is part of Doncaster Council’s Smartlight project that will see existing lights replaced by LED luminaires from Urbis Schréder. The new streetlights are wirelessly connected and managed using Telensa’s PLANet system, ensuring lighting levels are set correctly and power consumption is accurately recorded. Doncaster’s Smartlight project will deliver savings of approximately GBP 1.3 million (US$)  annually by reducing energy consumption by 8.7 million kilowatt hours and carbon emissions by 4700 carbon tonnes.

Most Christmas lights, televisions and flashlights have one thing in common: they’re made with light emitting diodes (LEDs). LEDs are widely used for a variety of applications and have been a popular, more efficient alternative to fluorescent and incandescent bulbs for the past few decades. Two University of Utah researchers have now found a way to create LEDs from food and beverage waste. In addition to utilizing food and beverage waste that would otherwise decompose and be of no use, this development can also reduce potentially harmful waste from LEDs generally made from toxic elements.
