Many new and innovative lighting designs have been displayed at this year’s 100% Design Show at Earl’s Court, London. Chief among the inventions is an LED light with a thin butterfly wing-style film – The Air – a circle of light that uses LED lights along its outside rim. Several products showcased at the show have just been made available in the UK.

Recently Philips in Chengdu announced a new masterpiece: the Master LED bulb. The 7W Master LED bulb has a luminosity equivalent to a 60W incandescent bulb with an energy efficiency of around 85 percent. The life span of the bulb is about 15 years with the ability to be switched on and off roughly 50 thousand times. Such a long life span allows consumers to avoid the troublesome task of replacing bulb after bulb.

Foxconn announced its future smartphone business strategy plan will be focused on diversifying its products to avoid “solely munching on Apple,” according to high ranking company official Chen Hui Long at the Zhengzhou factory’s third anniversary celebration.  Foxconn is extending its product range in its “eight monitor” plan to include smartphones, tablets, notebooks, all-in-one computers, portable TV, smart TV, electronic billboards, and large outdoor LED displays, said Chen. 

Larson Electronics has announced the release of an LED roadway lamp designed to provide superior performance and longevity for more cost effective operation. The RWL-LED-20 48 Watt Street Light provides output comparable to a 70 watt HPS lamp, but with much better light quality, enhanced durability, and a 100,000 hour service rating.

Applied Materials, Inc. and Tokyo Electron Limited announced a definitive agreement to create a global innovator in semiconductor and display manufacturing technology via an all-stock combination which values the new combined company at approximately US$29 billion (¥2.8 trillion). Security surveillance over large distances is now possible thanks to the infrared Dragon Dome LED from Osram Opto Semiconductors. The focused beam of this high-power IRED achieves a range of more than 100 meters. It has a compact design and does not need an external lens. With its wavelength of 850 nanometers (nm), this LED is ideal as a light source for security surveillance tasks such as CCTV (Closed Circuit Television).

LEDforum 2013 Taipei will be hosted by LEDinside on October 16th-17th, 2013. MLC likewise has obtained a fair portion of market shares through aggressive price competition. During the conference, San’an will discuss the technology development of the LED wafer and MLS Lighting will focus on commercial lighting. This will be the first time for both manufacturers to participate in LEDforum.

The EPLC2-16C-150LED Explosion Proof Portable Tank Light carries Class 1 Division 1 and Class 2 Division 1-2 certification is designed for high output and easy mobility.

Earlier this year, the glamorous Westin Lima Hotel in Peru decided to renew its lighting system by adopting new LED lighting from GE Lighting. The upgrade to GE’s energy smart® LED GU10 Replacement Lamps generated an 88 percent savings in energy consumption compared to the former halogen lamps used at the Westin.

San'an Optoelectronics announced on September 25th that the company's wholly owned subsidiary Suncore Photovoltaic Technology Co. drew up an equity fund of RMB$200 million to establish a factory in Xiamen.

The China (Shanghai) Pilot Free trade Zone to be launched at the end of this month will be lifting a 13 year ban on game console sales in the zone that is expected to benefit IR LED manufacturers. Internet restrictions will also be lifted within the zone. The zone approved in August by the Chinese government was established to attract foreign investments.

Samsung announced it will be launching a bendable OLED smartphone in Oct., 2013, according to reports by Verge, Gizmodo, BBC and others. The flexible OLED screens will be introduced into the smartphone model GALAXY Note 3, and only a limited number will be sold. As the first OLED smartphone to enter the market, it is expected to catalyze OLEDs commercial applications.
