Power Integrations’ LinkSwitch™-PH Delivers Flicker-Free TRIAC Dimming for LED Downlights

Power Integrations introduced a new reference design (DER-281) detailing an 85%-efficient, 15 W PAR38 downlight driver that delivers flicker-free dimming without the use of unreliable high-voltage electrolytic bulk capacitors. Typical TRIAC dimmers were designed for incandescent lights that use an order of magnitude more power than LED lights of equivalent lumen output. The low current requirement of LED lights, especially when dimmed, can cause TRIACs to switch off unexpectedly or oscillate, creating an annoying flickering effect. Early-generation LED light...

Reduction Solution in LED Power Consumption

Germany’s annual power consumption is approximately 500 terawatt-hours (TWh) or 500 trillion watt-hours, with lighting accounting for almost 12 percent of that figure. Today, as much as 11.5 TWh or 20 percent of the electricity needed for lighting could be saved in Germany alone if incandescent lamps were consistently replaced by more energy-efficient LEDs. The potential saving is equivalent to the annual output of a large-scale power plant. Over the coming three years, Germany’s seven partners of the “EnLight” (Energy Efficient and Intelligent...

LEDinside's Prospective: Veeco’s Taiwanese Technology Center Establishment to Expect the Taiwanese Government to Support The Green Energy Industry

In regard to Veeco’s Taiwan Technology Center for the LED industry, Justin K. Wang, the VP/General Manager of Veeco Instrument Inc, and Dr. Ming Jiunn Jou, the President of Epistar Corporation, indicated that the future of LED makers comprises both risks and opportunities. Therefore, they hoped that the Taiwanese government can establish specific standards and criteria for LED lighting products, in the hope of raising awareness of LED products in consumers. Furthermore, if the government is willing to enact subsidy policies for the LED industry, the profits they bring will largely exceed the investment they require. That being said, the Taiwanese government should more actively support the energy-saving and green energy industries, otherwise the Taiwanese LED industry may be surpassed by South Korea in 2011 and decline to the third place in the total capacity of LED.
