Some consumers are starting to switch their regular household halogen or incandescent light bulbs to LED technology. Up until now, LEDs have typically been used more in professional applications, but they are beginning to increase in popularity as a household lighting solution.

It’s reported that Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC), a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, expands its LED driver product family with two new high-performance devices. The TB62777FNG and TB62778FNG devices are 8-channel, constant current LED drivers delivering a continuous current that can be regulated for superior illumination in the back-lighting of LCD panels, TV displays and notebook PCs, as well as light control for large RGB panel LED displays.

Recently, Philips Lumileds announced that Lansing Board of Water and Light (LBWL), a municipally owned utility in Lansing, Michigan, expanded its trial of LUXEON-based street lamps with the addition of six new fixtures illuminated by neutral white LUXEON Rebel LEDs.

It’s reported that researchers working in the European ROLLED project have developed a flexible OLED element that can be mass produced using roll-to-roll printing technology. The OLED elements can be used to add value to product packages. The new method is considerably cheaper than the traditional manufacturing method. The project was coordinated by VTT, and project participants included INM, CSEM, Ciba, Hansaprint, UPM and PolylC.

Recently, Arrow Asia Pac Ltd., a business unit of Arrow Electronics, Inc., announced it will cohost a lighting solution seminar in Taipei, Taiwan, on Nov. 19, with Cree, Inc., a market leader in LED solid-state lighting components.

Now, some manufacturers were becoming more and more serious about energy-saving technologies and other green technologies. At FPD International 2008, there exhibits booths of Korean and Taiwanese panel manufacturers, looking for their green technologies. Standing out the most at every booth were low power LCD TV panels.

The New York City Waterfalls public art installation, by artist Olafur Eliasson, comprised four man-made waterfalls in the New York Harbor situated along the shorelines of Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Governors Island. Recently, five large billboards, each measuring 4m high by 3m tall, have been installed at Barcelona airport by Sakma, a local manufacturer. The billboards use an array of LEDs, rather than fluorescent lamps, to achieve uniform lighting with much lower operating costs.

It’s reported that Cadillac has introduced the first car sold here to use an all-LED headlight system. Hella, a German lighting supplier that developed the system, recently showed off the new headlights at a demonstration for journalists at General Motors' GM Proving Grounds. Recently, PowerSecure International, Inc. announced that Walgreens will purchase the Company’s state-of-the-art green EfficientLights LED lighting technology for refrigerated cases installed in the majority of their new store openings in 2009.

Recently, Taiwan display maker Chi Mei EL unveiled its 25-inch screen that's less than a millimeter thick at the FPD International exhibition in Japan on Wednesday. The new screen is based on the emerging OLED technology and attracted a steady stream of show attendees who snapped pictures of the screen or who peered around the edge to take a look at just how thin it is.

It’s reported that Officials with Raleigh and Progress Energy are testing nine energy-efficient streetlights downtown to determine how well they withstand extreme heat, cold and rain. The last of the nine experimental lamps was installed Tuesday in front of Progress' downtown office tower on Davie Street. If the lights live up to their promise, they could take a significant bite out of Raleigh's $5.3 million annual streetlight bill.

Light bulbs and fluorescent tubes are far away from the optimal efficiency, while OLED can offer new perspectives for novel large area light sources for display and lighting applications. Such displays are increasingly applied to mobile telephones, digital cameras, or pocket computers. In future these small light miracles will play an important role for TV screens and for lighting.

Recently, Advanced Analogic Technologies, Inc. (AnalogicTech(TM)), a developer of power management integrated circuits, announced the AAT3104 and AAT3195, two new 4-channel, charge pump-based LED drivers for larger LCD screens in reduced feature set cell phones and portable systems. Available in compact 2 x 2.1mm packages, the devices offer designers 16-step, 32-step or PWM current control in a space-saving footprint.

Recently, LED lighting startup AHA LED of Taiwan opened its flagship shop in Taipei to build global marketing in light of the huge market potential of LED lighting. The company has reportedly landed US$72 million of orders from South Africa for LED lighting for roads and streets.

It’s reported that Osram introduced the Kreios™ family of LED modules to the entertainment lighting industry at LDI 2008.

It’s reported that Nittoh Kogaku KK exhibited an LED light source module for use in low-power advertising signage as a reference at Kogen (light source) 2008, an exhibition that took place at Pacifico Yokohama from Oct 22 to 24, 2008.

Cree Inc. has announced revenue of $140.4M for its fiscal 1Q09, ended September 28, 2008. This represents a 24% increase over revenue of $113.4M in 1Q08 and a 3% increase over 4Q08 revenue.

It’s reported that Dialight is moving European production from its engineering and business development base in York, UK, to its manufacturing facility in Newmarket, UK, starting October 28. It’s disclosed that the move is in response to the continuing worldwide growth in demand for high quality LED lighting products. This growth has been accompanied by customer demand for higher levels of quality assurance and third party approvals such as UL, ENEC and ATEX.

Recently, Littelfuse Inc. has introduced the PLED 6 series, an open LED protector that provides a switching electronic shunt path when a single LED in an LED array fails as an open circuit. This ensures that the entire array of LEDs will continue to function even if a single LED in the array does not.  

It’s reported that Progress Energy and the city of Raleigh would complete the installation of LED streetlights downtown as part of a test of the lighting technology.

The residential zone, "Azabu no Oka," is located in Miyoshicho, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, and developed by Toyota Smile Life Inc. The roads and pathways in the zone, which has 204 housing plots, will be illuminated by LED lamps. It will take some time before the entire subdivision is completed, but LED lamps have been used since the start of the project.
