ESCATEC, one of Europe’s leading providers of contract design and manufacturing services, has designed a next generation, miniaturised TIR (Total Internal Reflection) lens for high brightness LEDs. About a twentieth of the size of current TIR lenses, ESCATEC’s next generation TIR lens is mounted directly onto the bare LED and secured in place with special clear optical glue. This secures the two items together with no air gap for optimal optical coupling, ensuring that the light is transferred from the LED to the TIR lens with minimal sideways losses, giving an optical efficiency of up to 95% of light being directed out of the front of the lens.

China’s ecommerce giants announced their breaking revenue results for Single’s Day on Nov. 12, 2015. The country’s online total revenue on the anti-Valentines day, commonly known as Single’s Day to locals, soared 52.7% to reach RMB 122.94 billion (US $19.29 billion), compared to last year’s RMB 80.5 billion according to data compiled by Syntun. Internet packages and deliveries climbed up 65.7% to reach RMB 678 million.

Osram, a global leader of lighting manufacturer based in Germany recently announced an additional investment of EUR 3 billion (US $3.24 billion) by the year 2020, in line of becoming a semiconductor company following the planned disposal of its traditional lamps and light bulbs business.. The additional investments comprised of EUR 1 billion for the construction of a new light emitting diode (LED) chip plant in Kulim, Malaysia. The new plant will be the largest and latest 6-inch LED chip production site worldwide. The balance EUR 2 billion will be invested in research and development (R&D) for the Osram Group globally.

A Korean research team jointly led by Professor Chan Beum Park of the Materials Science and Engineering Department at KAIST and Dr. Kwon Yu from the Bionano Center at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) conducted research to suppress an abnormal assembly of beta-amyloids, a protein commonly found in the brain, by using photo-excited porphyrins.
