The U.S. Department of Energy's CALiPER program has released Report 23: Photometric Testing of White-Tunable LED Luminaires, which is the first in a planned series of investigations on color-tunable LED luminaires. The main goal of the new study was to understand the amount of testing required to characterize a white-tunable LED lighting product. In this case, determining a sufficient protocol required more extensive testing than would be feasible for widespread use. Eight white-tunable luminaires were tested at dozens of points covering the range of color tuning (CCT) and dimming (luminous intensity).

Every fifth kilowatt hour of electricity around the world is used for artificial light. LED technology, however, is making significant savings possible. About 13 million tons of CO 2 could be saved in Germany alone, equaling the emission of about seven million cars; in German office buildings, the electricity bill could be reduced by more than Euro 500 million. But how can we make introducing the technology easier for industry and end users? With .dp digital power 2.0™ Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) has developed a digital platform for power supply with which the LED lighting systems can be controlled intelligently, thus making maximum energy savings possible.

Osram Opto Semiconductors is unveiling an LED prototype in surface mount technology (SMT) with a brightness of up to 2000 lumen (lm) at ISAL 2015 – the Oslon Black Flat S. Experts achieved this high output by combining five chips from the latest UX:3 generation with an improved SMT package. A single LED is therefore sufficient as the light source for combined low-beam and high-beam systems. The excellent thermal connection with the package allows for passive cooling, which reduces system costs. The Oslon Black Flat S is consequently a viable alternative to HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps and is scheduled to be added to the Osram automotive portfolio at the end of 2016.

Plessey announced that it has developed a patented technology for Chip Scale Optics (CSO) based on its award winning GaN-on-Silicon MaGIC ™ LEDs. Chip Scale Optics permits design of light emission angles down to ten degrees direct from the LED. Having the primary optics on-chip eliminates the cost of primary optics typically found in packaged LEDs and chip-on-board modules. Furthermore, it significantly lowers the cost and provides for far greater design freedom for secondary optics within a luminaire. The first off applications include retail spot lighting, hospitality lighting, high and low bays, street lighting and stadium lighting. It is estimated that Plessey’s chip scale optics will halve the cost of these lighting applications.

The window is a key element in the design of sacred spaces. Coloured glass was used in Gothic cathedrals to bathe the church interior in a "divine" light that makes reference to the afterlife. Even in the 20th century the church window is still playing an important role, as shown in the design of a window at Cologne Cathedral by the painter Gerhard Richter.
