Displays with Multi CHIPLEDs by OSRAM Opto raise image quality to a new level

For indoor and outdoor applications, FormoLight Technologies, one of the major Taiwan-based display manufacturers, has developed a high-performance LED video display with superior qualities. An LED solution developed by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors ensures brilliant colors and sharp contrasts: particularly compact Multi CHIPLEDs produce impressive high-quality images.

The LED video displays by FormoLight impress with rich colors and sharp contours - thanks to extremely compact Multi CHIPLEDs by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors.

The Multi CHIPLEDs by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors used in the new FormoLight display are the smallest RGB LED currently on the market. Their compact size permits a special image format. In this display for interior use, the LEDs are not used as backlighting hidden from observers as in LCD appliances, but are clearly visible on the surface. However, they remain undetected by observers, because the Multi CHIPLEDs are extremely small (1.6 mm x 1.6 mm and 0.9 mm thick) and hardly visible through the black LED housing.

"Information has to be presented clearly in every respect. This concerns not only the concept of visualisation, but also the technical reproduction. Excellent image quality is needed, which is easier to realise thanks to the advantages of LEDs, such as their directional characteristics and light quality", explains Sven Weber of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. "The black LED housing reflects almost no ambient light, thus ensuring a perfectly flawless image." The FormoLight display thus impresses with rich colors, sharp contours and depth of field, showing high-quality images rich in contrast.

Convincing from every angle
Multi CHIPLEDs produce a homogenous image from every perspective. This homogeneity is based on two principles. On the one hand, LEDs can be packed very closely because of their compact size – distance between pixels can be as little as 2mm. On the other, the special casting material ensures a perfect color mix. The LED contains three chips (red, green, blue) in Thinfilm or ThinGaN technology, each of which can be controlled separately. The color impression remains constant across the entire viewing angle and also appears brilliant viewed from the side. Thanks to the LEDs’ sharp contrasts and high output, this high image quality is maintained even in very light rooms. From an economic perspective, the use of this technology is also worthwhile: LEDs are characterised by low power consumption and long durability.
