Getting out of bed in the morning isn’t always a piece of cake, especially after being startled awake by the jarring sound of an alarm clock. With the Philips Wake-up Light, users can rise and shine with a gradually increasing light accompanied by soft sound. With a variety of brightness settings, users are able to select their optimal wake-up conditions. This device mimics natural daybreak over a 30-minute period to help gently waken users, giving them a calm start to their day.
To achieve this natural-looking lighting, Philips needed a transparent, translucent material and a reflective white thermoplastic ideal for lighting applications. The HF3500 Wake-up Light model also required a material with a good combination of light transmittance, diffusion and reflection.
Makrolon
® 2405 polycarbonate from Covestro was the optimal choice for Philips’ Wake-up Light. This general purpose, low-viscosity polycarbonate grade is often used in
LED lighting and is available in transparent, translucent and opaque colors. For the Wake-up Light application, Covestro developed a specific color of Makrolon
® 2405 polycarbonate: translucent color 021177.
To obtain the reflective white look desired for specific product components, Philips turned to Makrolon® RW2405 polycarbonate. Reflective white (RW) polycarbonate grades are characterized by their high efficiency in reflecting visible light, while also providing outstanding design freedom.
With the exceptional properties of Makrolon® 2405 polycarbonate and Makrolon® RW2405 polycarbonate, Philips was able to provide users with a natural and gentle start to their day.
