【GILE 2019】China and Taiwan LED Makers Say Micro LED and Mini LED Display Technology Ready for Mass Production

Despite that the core of GILE is LED lighting and lighting related applications, LED producers who joined the event this year took the opportunity to present their latest development of Micro LED and Mini LED technologies.

Micro LED Display

Shineon from Beijing, China, showcased a 139-inch 4K Micro LED display at GILE 2019. The Micro LED display is spliced by 576 units of 96mm*96mm Micro LED display module which their pitch size is 0.8mm.

Shineon and Lumens from South Korea have developed Micro LED display modules with pitch sizes from 2.0mm to 0.55mm. The Micro LED display unveiled, IconiView, is based on Flip-Chip-on-Module technology with pixel driven LED chips, reaching a pixel density of 1,570,900 pixel/m2, a contrast ratio of 3000:1, and 2000nit. The company claimed that the product has been verified and is ready for mass production.

Mini LED backlight and display module

Ever since Mini LED backlight applications entered the market last year, it has become one of the mainstream display technologies. Chinese LED and panel makers are also proactively pushing their Mini LED display technology development. Many companies exhibited their new progress at GILE.

Nationstar showcased two Mini LED backlight solutions, SMD backlight and COB backlight. SMD backlight applied special light emitting design which optimizes emitting angle and improves brightness, which allows less LED chips arranged in wider pitch for delivering high performance with less production cost. COB backlight uses flip-chip on PCB substrate with smaller pitch size and more LED chips for more delicate display performance. Its P1.5 and P1.0 backlight solutions target mobile phone applications while its P3.0 and P4.0 solutions are made for large size displays such as TVs, gaming notebooks and monitors. The P3.0 solution is ready for mass production.

Re-fond also demonstrated a 65-inch Mini LED backlight display which its pitch size was 0.68mm, showing high contrast and color saturation with local dimming.

Hongli Zhihui exhibited a 12.3-inch, P0.7 Mini LED display for the first time during the show. The display module was manufactured with flip-chip technology on COB substrate. A unit of the display module consists of more than 40,000 Mini LED chips. The company has delivered sample of the Mini LED products and is targeting AR/VR and TV applications.

Taiwan-based Everlight presented Mini LED module as well. The company showed a 160-inch, P1.25 Mini LED display and a 16.7-inch, P0.75 Mini LED display module. Everlight adopted flip-chip technology and COB packaging for the displays. The targeted applications include wearables and large sized displays.
