【Exclusive Interview】Seoul Viosys UV-C LED revenue ranked first in the world and China in 2020

After many years of dedicated investments in researching and developing UV LED products, Seoul Viosys has earned its reputation as one of the world’s leading UV LED suppliers. Besides having a product portfolio that covers the entire UV LED spectrum, the company is also ahead of its competitors in the major market segments such as curing, phototherapy, and disinfection (including surface disinfection, air purification, and water sterilization).

The COVID-19 pandemic that continues to wreak havoc around the globe has dramatically raised people’s awareness of the need to improve public sanitation and manage health-related risks. Hence, products that use UV-C LED to kill pathogens are gaining growing interest among consumers as well as manufacturers of branded electronics and appliances. According to TrendForce 2021 Deep UV LED Application Market and Branding Strategies, Seoul Viosys UV-C LED revenue ranked first in the world and China in 2020, and Seoul Viosys violeds technology has been applied to more than 120 home appliances products by many home appliance companies around the world. LEDinside recently had the honor of inviting Ridge Lin, VP of sales at Seoul Viosys, to give an update on the latest advances that his company has made in the field of UV LED.

UV-C LEDs that deliver only single wavelength of 275nm cause less safety concerns regarding the irradiation. At the same time, UV-C LED has the advantage of being a compact light source for disinfecting surfaces and small enclosed spaces. As COVID-19 has spread to all corners of the globe following the Lunar New Year of 2020, there also has been a noticeable uptick in the demand for portable UV-C devices that disinfect surfaces and objects frequently touched by many people (such as door handles, shoe cabinets, shoe soles, etc.).

Lin pointed out that the demand for UV-C LED will be slightly different in form during 2021. COVID-19 outbreaks spurred the demand for portable UV-C devices last year. As for this year, there is a visible trend of home appliance manufacturers targeting the market segment for air conditioning plus purification. To meet this demand, Seoul Viosys has been steadily improving the efficiency and performance of its UV-C LED products. Lin said that its 275nm UV-C LED is capable of maintaining a radiant flux of 20mW even at a current output of 100mW. Products with these advanced specifications are being mass produced and shipped to clients. Their intended applications include the disinfection function of air conditioners and flowing water sterilization. Additionally, Lin reported that the company’s multi-chip UV LED has reached 65mW and is scheduled for production within this year so as to satisfy other kinds of demand from different clients.

Seoul Viosys has carefully studied this year’s market situation. Based on the latest observations, Lin told LEDinside that his company will be focusing on the following three areas in its development of UV-C LED products.

[1] Appliance market: Seoul Viosys has already spent many years developing UV-C LED solutions for home appliances. The growth of this market segment is expected to be steady this year as home appliance brands continue to incorporate UV-C LED into their line-ups of products.

[2] Automotive market: An increasing number of carmakers are recognizing the importance of the air purification function of the HVAC system. This will contribute to the demand growth for UV-C LED.

[3] Water sterilization market: Seoul Viosys is bullish about the demand for flowing water sterilization in the industrial and commercial markets, and UV-C LED is expected to make a huge breakthrough in this application area in the near future.

Lastly, Lin said that his company has not scaled back its attention on the development of UV-A LED solutions for curing applications. Presently, Seoul Viosys has already successfully released products for numerous curing-related market segments such as LCD lamination equipment, exposure machines, and cable curing. The company began venturing into the market for 3D printing in November last year. It currently expects that the solutions it has developed for 3D printing will start contributing to revenue generation within this year.
