Signify’s UV-C Disinfection Trolley Can Inactivate 99% of COVID-19 Virus and Helps Boost COVID-19 Fight

The Taiwanese government raised its COVID-19 alert to Level 3 amid a spike in domestic cases. To help with epidemic prevention, Signify, formerly known as Philips Lighting, developed a UV-C disinfection trolley that can break down 99% of SARS-CoV-2 virus in 6 seconds.

Moreover, Signify has donated 10 trolleys to Taipei City in an attempt to stand with healthcare workers, police, and firefighters combating the pandemic.

Coronavirus can last for a long time on specific surfaces, particularly on stainless steel and plastic surfaces for up to 3 days; expanded spread of COVID-19 is a potential factor causing increases in confirmed cases. By using Signify’s UV-C light source products, Dr. Anthony Griffiths, Associate Professor of Microbiology at Boston University and his team conducted a study on coronavirus. During the research, they treated inoculated materials with different doses of UV-C radiation to explore the effectiveness of UV-C radiation on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 virus.

As suggested by Griffiths, the research team successfully inactivated 99% of the virus by applying a radiation dose of 5 mJ/cm2 for 6 seconds. Accordingly, a dose of 22 mJ/cm2 is likely reduce 99.9999% of the virus in 25 seconds. This finding can then be applied to medical, research, and related environments. In other words, the experiment demonstrated that a specific dosage and length of UV-C radiation can completely eradicate the COVID-19 virus.

Signify indicated that UV-C radiation can inactivate 99% of SARS-CoV-2 virus with an exposure time of 6 seconds, thereby achieving effective air, surface, and object disinfection as well as comprehensive on-site sterilization. This radiation technology not only creates an extremely safe place for frontline workers but ensures patient and public safety.

To help Taiwan fight against coronavirus, Signify announced a plan to donate 10 Philips Disinfection Trolleys to five major branches of Taipei City Hospital, police departments, fire departments, and district offices, enabling them to establish infection control and reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. UV-C radiation can purify the air, water, and object surfaces by disrupting the DNA and RNA replication of viruses within seconds and demonstrates satisfactory virus inactivation, allowing frontline workers to focus on their fight against the pandemic and reassuring the public.
