【Exclusive Interview】Excelitas Advanced Photon Emission and Detection Solutions to Usher Industrial LiDAR and Range-Finding Markets

Excelitas Technologies Corp. is a global technology leader providing innovative and customized photonic solutions. For decades, the company has been actively engaged in the development of pulsed lasers, fast and sensitive detectors for Industrial LiDAR and range-finding markets. LEDinside / TrendForce had the honor to have an interview with Dr. Jürgen Schilz, Vice President Detection, to share his extensive industry experience in photonics, and gain valuable insight into the LiDAR and range-finding markets and Excelitas’ current progress in LiDAR Laser and photonic technologies.

Regarding the LiDAR market, Jürgen Schilz noted that industrial LiDAR market demand has bloomed this year, especially in Europe, followed by Asia and America. A 20% annual growth rate can be expected. Schilz revealed that LiDARs have already been applied in Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) and Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) for industrial uses. In addition, market demand from safety scanner in factories and area sensing in construction industry is steadily growing in this year. Excelitas LiDAR Lasers have been engaged by leading edge industrial LiDAR players for many years.

When it comes to Automotive LiDAR, the deployment into the automotive industry has not gone as expected. Jürgen Schilz indicated that the demand from project-based Robocars, such as Robotaxi, autonomous bus and autonomous truck, has though been steadily increasing. However, car makers have paid much attention on electric vehicle, therefore, ADAS development has been still slow, pushing large-scale deployments out by several years.

In response to the range-finding / LiDAR market demands, Excelitas has been providing 905 nm edge-emitting lasers for the LiDAR market and 1,550nm edge-emitting lasers for range-finding and defense market. Compared to VCSELs, edge-emitting lasers have the advantage to deliver high power at a small spot-size and the ability to produce light pulses in the nanosecond-range. These are prerequisites for long range sensing – preferably up to 200~300-meter. Jürgen Schilz indicated that the company has successfully raised 20% outpower for two LiDAR Lasers, both To-can and SMD types to satisfy industrial LiDAR market needs. Furthermore, Excelitas has sampled auto-graded LiDAR Laser to car makers.

In addition, Excelitas so far unmatched Single-Photon-Counting-Modules (SPCM) are suitable for a variety of cutting-edge analytical applications, including particle sizing (DLS), ultra-sensitive fluorescence, single-molecule detection, diffused correlation spectroscopy (DCS), and more. There is recent high interest to apply SPCMs in quantum communication. Excelitas indicated that SPCM product revenue has been achieving a strong  growth over the past years.

A new product is the balanced receiver, CIPRM, a component used in 1550 nm FMCW LiDAR applications. There is currently large interest in measuring wind-speed around wind-turbines using FMCW LiDAR technology.
