Mobile 3D sensing

As 3D imaging and SWIR (short-wave infrared) sensing technologies are widely adopted, an increasing number of mobile and wearable devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, smart watches, health wristbands, TWS earbuds) have been equipped with optical and 3D sensors. Devices with such sensors can more accurately achieve visual object recognition, making their users’ lives safer and more convenient.

Concerning mobile and wearable applications, Artilux has launched the Aware Series, a product line powered by NIR (near infrared)- and SWIR-based wideband optical sensing. Through integration of the novel GeSi (Germanium-Silicon) technology and single-chip CMOS circuitry, the Aware sensors can optimize object detection for mobile and wearable devices (e.g., TWS earbuds and smart watches), including accurate in-ear detection, biometric signal recognition, moisture measurement and other critical features.

In response to AR, VR, MR applications, Artilux has also developed the Explore Seriesbased on wide spectrum 3D ToF. The product line realizes ultra-sensitive 3D imaging for facial recognition, gesture recognition and object tracking consistently in indoor (dim light) and outdoor (strong light) environments. The Explore Series provide wearables with greater accuracy, interactivity and immersion, which in turn optimize user experience.

LiDAR

Thanks to technological advances in semiconductor, smart IoT, 5G transmission, edge computing and renewable energy sectors, the automotive industry is undergoing a major revolution towards electrification, automation and car sharing, where human–machine interaction and smart living will be the feature of tomorrow. In response to the upcoming future of self-driving, 3D sensing is the optimal distance measurement tool for full self-driving, as vehicles—in addition to detecting objects around—must be able to detect objects in mid- and long distances (30-300m) for safety concerns. The existing automotive sensors can be simultaneously adopted, including LiDAR units, radars and conventional cameras, which LiDAR has the best accuracy- of 3D imaging with a wide viewing angle, making the technology a perfect option for self-driving systems prioritizing safety. However, the cost of LiDAR systems is extremely high, which can be more than ten times that of CMOS cameras.

Accordingly, Artilux unveiled mid- and long-range (30-300m) automotive LiDAR solutions, namely the Foresee Series, by combining the advanced GeSi CMOS technology to determine high-frequency SWIR wavelength ranges. Moreover, the solutions deliver greater performance with high accuracy regarding detection range, eye safety and extensibility. Engineered with 12” CMOS process, the Foresee products help reduce the LiDAR cost to reach affordable safety, accelerating the progress of LiDAR being widely applied to 3D imaging and sensing systems for driver assistance, semi-autonomous driving and fully autonomous driving.

Interior sensing (DMS and OMS)

There are mainly three technologies used for 3D sensing, namely stereo vision with low resolution, structured light with a high cost and ToF with long-range distance measurement. Specifically, the CMOS-based ToF technology has developed rapidly with the rise of mobile devices, self-driving cars, industrial automation and AIoT. The 3D ToF works by calculating the time that optical signals travel between a sensor and the target object for distance determination. Wavelength of light is a critical factor affecting the performance of 3D ToF imaging and sensing technologies. Operating wavelengths mostly range between 850nm and 940nm; that is, 3D imaging can be realized at the wavelength range of NIR. As for 3D imaging at the SWIR range (wavelengths greater than 1000nm), III–V//InGaAs must be used as the major sensor components. However, such components are rarely adopted due to their high costs.

As Artilux’ major product line, the Explore Seriesis the world’s first 2D and 3D imaging solution with a wide range of NIR and SWIR spectrum. Artilux also partnered with TSMC to develop the first-ever single-chip CMOS-based GeSi imager and comprehensive 3D ToF module solutions featuring high resistance to interference and accurate depth information. Because of the extended SWIR wavelength range, the imager can penetrate objects such as silicone bottles, quickly identify a black object and determine the moisture content of an object. In indoor and outdoor environments, the Explore products can deliver optimized detection performance regarding resolution, sensitivity and cost as well as facilitate the use of 3D ToF imaging and technologies to various scenarios. When being used for in-car sensing, for example, the Explore Series—through facial recognition, gesture control and object detection—help identify occasions with safety concerns (e.g., those involving driver fatigue, lack of concentration, low-visibility night traffic, heavy fog and blurred traffic), aiming to prevent traffic accidents.
