Ming-Chi Kuo: Meta to Announce Advanced VR Headset in 2H22, While Apple Will Delay AR/MR Product Launch to Late 2022

On January 5, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst from TF International, reported that Meta will launch a new advanced VR headset in 2H22. The launch of Apple’s AR/MR headset will be delayed to the end of this year, while Sony’s PS5 VR device will be shipped starting in 2Q22.

Specifically, Meta plans to release the Oculus Quest 3 in 2H22 with an estimated shipment of 1–2 million units.

According to the report, the Quest 3 is the first Meta VR device using 2.48-inch Mini LED screens with a resolution of 2160×2160 and unit cost of $25–30; Sharp and JDI are the suppliers.

Additionally, Kuo reiterated that Apple will delay the release of its AR/MR headset to the late 2022, while the shipment volume will not be noticeably high until the first quarter in 2023.

Reportedly, Apple will install a pair of 3P Pancake Lenses in its AR/MR gadget with a cost of $15–20 per unit. Added with the revenue from cameras, the product will contribute a profit of $45–55 each to GeniuS Electronic Optical (GSEO; the lens supplier), equaling to the profit of $25–35 7P lenses.

Kuo estimates that Meta will witness a 30% YoY increase in the shipment of VR products to 12 million units in 2022. As for Sony’s VR device that will be shipped starting in 2Q22, GSEO and Goertek will be the suppliers of the high-priced Fresnel lens (each vendor will share half of the total orders). Further, Apple’s product will begin contributing to the revenue growth for GSEO starting in 1Q23. (Source: Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International)
