GT Advanced Technology’s exit bankruptcy details were filed in court this week, according to an Apple Insider report based on summary made by The Wall Street Journal earlier this week.

“Every year there are escaping manufacturers, but this has become an ongoing trend in 2014,” is a common saying in China’s lighting industry. This is related to the easing domestic economic market, and slowdown in the real estate market leading to diminishing construction projects, said industry insiders. The LED industry is in a rapidly expanding phase, and all these indicate “winter is coming” in the LED lighting industry. However, not all manufacturers are capable of defending themselves against the “cold” and some have resorted to “selfish” measures.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) used “bait-and-switch” tactics in negotiating a contract with sapphire-maker GT Advanced Technologies Inc. (GTATQ), guaranteeing itself “heads I win, tails you lose” terms, a GT executive said in an unsealed court document.

Taiwanese sapphire manufacturer Tera Xtal Technology remained upbeat about claiming payment from the bankrupt U.S.-based MOCVD manufacturer GT Advanced Technology (GTAT), according to a UDN report. Tera Xtal held a press conference on Wednesday under Taiwan’s Gretai Securities Market request to explain to investors the impact from GTAT’s bankruptcy filing.

GT Advanced Technologies (GTAT), announced that it had, together with certain of its direct and indirect subsidiaries (collectively, GT), commenced voluntary cases under chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Hampshire. GT expects the court will authorize the company to continue to conduct business as usual while it devotes renewed efforts to resolve its current issues and develops a reorganization plan.

Large manufacturers are taking advantage of other companies during their weak moments, burying the hatchet with well matched companies, or joining hands to defeat competitors. Many less competitive weaker companies  receded from the market this year. The survival of the fittest is anticipated to continue well into 2014.
