CES 2009 helped mark a number of upcoming technological trends that have either already reached the market or are about to do so in the next 12 months. Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) display technology made an impact at CES 2009.

Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) have developed and demonstrated a new type of LED with significantly improved lighting performance and energy efficiency. The researchers worked in collaboration with Samsung Electro-Mechanics to develop the new polarization-matched LED that they say exhibits an 18 percent increase in light output and a 22 percent increase in wall-plug efficiency, which essentially measures the amount of electricity the LED converts into light.

The 14th annual Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition to be held June 9-12, 2009 at the China Import and Export Fair, Pazhou Complex, in Guangzhou, China, is adding a second LED exhibit hall this year. The LED booths were very popular last year, perhaps due in part to complement the growing interest in the China LED market in China.

OQO Inc. of San Francisco unveiled the first computer with a screen of organic light-emitting diodes last week at the International Consumer Electronics show. The company touted this technology would be as the future of both displays and lighting.

Samsung Electronics showed off a new line of high-end, ultra-slim, energy-efficient televisions at CES 2009 and planned to increase the proportion of TVs it makes using LED technology. The company has put a big emphasis on LED-backlighting on this year's LCDs, and its LN-B8000 series are the most souped-up models at CES 2009.

The warranty period against image burn-in for active-matrix OLED panels is expected to exceed 2,000 hours in 2010, and these panels will be available for laptops, according to Woo Jong Lee, vice president of the Mobile Display Marketing Team of Samsung SDI Co Ltd.

It’s reported that Taiwan LED maker Epistar Corp. brings its green-blue LED chips with brightness of 2000mcd to join Korea’s Samsung Electronics’ supply chain of LED-backlit LCD TVs.

Recently, the addition of the "Global and China OLED Market Report, 2007-2012" report is offered, as the development trends of the next generation display technology industry are concerned, OLEDs are still a highly important sector of the market. The global OLED production capacity is mainly distributed across Korea, Japan and China Taiwan, with the shipments of the top five manufacturers accounting for 98.7% of the global total.

It’s reported that the use of LED backlights in LCD TVs will start to grow rapidly from 2009 as TV makers introduce slimmer models.

Recently, Freescale Semiconductor and Samsung Electronics announced they will collaborate to address the burgeoning market for LEDs. Arman Naghavi, vice president and general manager of Freescale's Analog, Mixed-Signal and Power Division, pointed out that Freescale's LED backlight driver technology is the industry's most compact and integrated solution, their  collaboration with Samsung on LED backlighting in order to help spur further innovation and growth in the LCD market.

Now, some manufacturers were becoming more and more serious about energy-saving technologies and other green technologies. At FPD International 2008, there exhibits booths of Korean and Taiwanese panel manufacturers, looking for their green technologies. Standing out the most at every booth were low power LCD TV panels.

It’s reported that LED chipmaker Epistar Corp. has landed hefty contracts to build the chips for Samsung and begun shipping the chips last month.

It’s reported that more than half of the 4.6 million 2-inch-equivalent sapphire wafers used for LED growth in 2007 were consumed by Taiwanese companies. The market for sapphire materials in electronic applications looks set to reach $400 million by 2012. Sapphire materials serve two main applications in the electronics field: GaN-based LEDs, and RF switch devices for mobile phones.

In the IFA 2008, many manufacturers introduced LED TVs to show their capability of combining LED and TV technology.SamsungFor example, Samsung introduced the A950 series, which supports Full HD(1920*1080) with screens made 46 or 55 inches, and adopts LED back light, which can control the brightness more efficiently.Sony

Why use LED backlight？A few days ago in the IFA 2008 hosted in Berlin，many of the branded TV manufacturers introduced LED-backlighted TVs(LED TV)，aimed at the top layer of customers. Some leading manufacturers such as Sony and Samsung already introduced LED TV in 2006，but with the costs of LED have decreased and the LED technology has progressed rapidly, LED TV has moved toward a real product rather than just a demonstration of technology.

Recently, Luminus Devices and Everlight have each announced that their LEDs are powering new types of projectors. Luminus LEDs used in Samsung, LG projectors, Everlight starts shipping LEDs for micro projectors.

Recently, Samsung Electronics, the world's largest maker of liquid crystal displays, and Samsung SDI, a plasma display panel maker, announced they will set up a joint venture to develop an organic electroluminescent display panel.
