According to the latest report from LEDinside, a division of the market research firm TrendForce, 2017 Chinese LED Chip and Package Industry Market Report, Chinese LED package market scale in 2016 reached RMB 58.9 billion, went up by 6% YoY, higher than expected. LED price held steady in 2016, some products saw price growth, and the industry is still in an uptrend under the drive of fine-pitch, automotive and lighting markets. According to the latest ‘ 2017 Global Sapphire and LED Chip Market Report by LEDinside, a division of the global market research firm TrendForce, LED chip market value was USD 6,329 million in 2015, while it grew by 3% to USD 6,502 million in 2016. Since the second half of 2016, Chinese LED packaging manufacturers have scaled up rapidly, targeting applications expected to prevail in the market for the next three years, including general lighting, automotive lighting, and display application. That further fosters Tier 1 Chinese LED chip manufacturers to volume up their productivity.

According to the latest 2015 Global LED Industry Supply and Demand Database Report by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, capacity expansion efforts of Chinese LED chip manufacturers have resulted a supply glut with this year’s LED chip supply-demand ratio reaching 22%. LEDinside also estimates that the global MOCVD installed volume in 2015 will grow to 3,130 chambers, among which 1,473 are located in China and will account for 47% of this year’s global MOCVD capacity (MOCVD systems used in the calculation are of the K465i model).

In 1H13, listed Chinese LED manufacturers’ total revenue increased at a Year Over Year (YOY) rate of 24.26% to US$ 629.62 million, while LED chip manufacturers’ revenue reached US$ 274.01 million. LED package manufacturers listed on the Chinese bourse also saw their revenue increase to US$ 355.61 million. Although, chip prices plunged in 1H13, overall sales increased at a YOY rate of 15.42%, companies have implemented low pricing strategies as manufacturers expanded production capacity. Taking into consideration factors including the timing of the production capacity expansion and chip performance, there were huge differences in chip manufacturers’ revenues. Affected by the LED lighting market demand, China’s major chip manufacturers’ production utilization rate reached a historical high, with San’an Optoelectronics and Elec-tech International (ETI) utilization rates at 87% and 59% respectively. Package manufacturers, especially in backlight field had the highest profits as they benefited from unexpected volume increases for lighting applications during 1H13 and an increasingly domestic backlight module supply chain.
