Philips Lighting launches the next generation LED tube tailored for office and educational environments, retail spaces and warehouses: the Philips MASTER LEDtube Universal T8. The universal LED tube brings new levels of ease and simplicity to lighting projects, addressing a growing demand from lighting professionals for LED tubes. According to recent Philips Lighting research, over half of lighting professionals are already opting to replace old fluorescent tubes with LED alternatives driven by reduced energy and maintenance costs.

Everlight Chairman Robert Yeh issued a statement clarifying a recently misleading Taiwan media report that claimed the company was abandoning the LED tube and bulb market.

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. today introduced the industry’s first AC Direct step-dimming LED linear replacement for T8 and T12 fluorescent tubes at the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) Convention 2014. Designed for use in commercial environments, the new LED Tube (L-Tube) offers an alternative to traditional fluorescent lamps to maximize energy efficiency and lower facility maintenance costs. It will be on display in booth #2112 at Chicago’s McCormick Place West from September 27-30.

Thailand has seen a drop in energy consumption of one percent over the past four months, said Zhang Shuncai, Department Head of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). This drop in energy consumption correlates directly to the current economic situation. There is a chance for a further decrease to 2 percent by the end of the year if political instabilities continue.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that it started production of a new AC direct type LED tube (L-Tube) that features the industry’s highest efficacy of 140 lumens per watt (lm/W) at 5000K. The new Samsung S-140 L-Tube will be introduced in Japan first. “High efficacy is one of the key indicators of technological excellence in the LED lighting industry and Samsung is leading the way by offering one of the industry’s most advanced products in our new S-140 L-Tube,” said Jaap Schlejen, senior vice president, LED lighting sales and marketing of Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to invest in R&D and LED package innovation in order to maintain its technology leadership in the global L-Tube market,”

Since the first light bulb was invented in the 1800’s new lamp technology has evolved. When the fluorescent tube was invented in 1929, sales of traditional light bulbs plummeted, and then in the 1970’s along came the compact fluorescent, since then new variations have evolved, sales of the former types have virtually disappeared, but the fundamental lamp design has remained unchanged, using a heating element to ignite gases and produce light. The use of a heating element results in energy being wasted as heat as opposed to generating light.
