According to the 2016 Chinese LED Chip and Package Industry Market Report by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, the market scale of China’s LED package reaches 2% year on year (YoY) growth at US $8.8 billion in 2015. The COB LED market has witnessed rapid growth over the past few years. An apparent example is that COB LEDs are gaining higher penetration rate in high-end commercial lighting applications. Meanwhile, outdoor illumination market also finds COB LED packages’ growing penetration rate. Therefore, more and more manufacturers enter the COB LED market. Aside from international manufacturers that entered the market in the early stage, including Citizen, Sharp, Bridgelux and Luminus Devices, leading manufacturers like CREE, Lumileds and Nichia also tapped into the market of COB LEDs. The number of Chinese manufacturers that entered COB LED package market is even higher, including Sunpu Opto, Guangzhou LEDteen Optoelectronics Co., Shenzhen Crescent Optoelectronic Co. and Shenzhen Tongyifang Optoelectronic Technology co. With more players entering the industry, the market has also witnessed huge change. Overall, international manufacturers are still dominant in China’s COB market.

Japanese LED chip manufacturer Citizen booth might have been the furthest from the show entrance at LED Expo Thailand this year, but its prototype LED COB and AC LED modules attracted a steady stream of visitors towards its booth.

Prestigious American Chip-on-Board (COB) manufacturer Bridgelux mistly displayed COB product series under the spotlight at Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition (GILE) 2014, that ran from June 9-12 in Guangzhou, China.

Lextar Electronics, a vertically-integrated LED company from Taiwan, will showcase its COB (Chip-on-Board) "Nimbus" series that feature high CRI (90), LM-80 quality and Hot Color Targeting (see note 1). Taiwanese LED package manufacturer Edison Opto consolidated revenue for Dec. 2013 reached NT$ 209 million (US$ 6.95 million), a decrease of 2.09 percent compared to last month. However, the company’s Dec. 2013 revenue has soared 50.1 percent compared to the same period last year. Affected by the traditionally low season in 4Q13, consolidated revenue reached NT$ 641 million, despite a quarterly decrease of 22.54%, consolidated revenue increased 38.54 percent. The company’s consolidated revenue in 2013 reached NT$ 2.74 billion, a YoY increase of 20.91%.

Taiwanese LED packager Edison Opto’s  3Q13 financial results showed the company’s consolidated revenue reached NT$ 826 million (US$ 27.99 million) and underwent a Year-on-Year (YoY) growth rate of 44.89 percent and Quarter-on-Quarter (QoQ) of 1.6 percent. Under market cutthroat price competition in 2Q, consolidated profit margin was up 7.7 percent compared to 2Q13 to 19.97 percent.
