The introduction of solid-state lighting using light-emitting diode (LED) technology has ignited widespread interest in the ways that lighting can offer benefits to people, including improved visibility at night, enhanced perceptions of brightness and security, and spectral tuning for management of circadian rhythms. The U.S. Department of Energy has released a new Snapshot report on LED outdoor area lighting. Based on DOE's LED Lighting Facts®database, the report focuses on outdoor area/roadway luminaires (including street lighting and wall packs), parking garage luminaires, and canopy luminaires (e.g., those used for gas station fuel pump areas). Retrofit kits and dedicated luminaires in these categories are not considered separately, as only in the area/roadway category did retrofit kits make up a notable percentage (8%) of the products listed in the category.

On 30th September 2017, Qingdao Jason Electric Ltd Co., one of major UV-C LEDs manufacture in the world, announced that they have successfully demonstrated 1000mW class high output power 275nm UV-C LEDs lamp. This research achievement has been attributed to their recent years’ progress on the production of 10mW UV-C LEDs with 10000hrs lifetime, and 100mW 6868 size packaged high power module for the flow water disinfection unit. Prices of LED lightbulbs remained on the downtrend in September, reports LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. Compared with the prior month, the global average sales price (ASP) of 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs fell by 2.1% to US$6.3, while the global ASP of the 60-watt equivalent products also dropped by 2.3% to US$7.5.   “Prices of LED light bulbs continued to fall in the U.S., the U.K. and Japan this September,” said LEDinside analyst Allen Yu.
