Chinese company, Elec-Tech International Co Ltd, which specializes in the development, manufacturing and sales of household appliances, has decided to invest RMB 320 million to a subsidiary Dalian Elec-Tech Photovoltaic Co that mainly engaged in designing, producing and selling LED chips and other LED products.

Powin Corp. has set up a wholly-owned renewable energy subsidiary to supply a line of renewable energy products such as LED lighting fixtures, wind turbines, solar panels and lithium batteries.

According to a report in Taiwan Economic News, Frank Chien, chairman of Taiwanese LED maker Formosa Epitaxy predicted that the rise of table PCs may drive shortage of high-end LED chips starting February 2011 at the earliest. Chien confirms that Formosa Epitaxy started delivering LEDs for tablet PCs in October.

Cypress Semiconductor’s LED power controller combine with MSi LED Light Bulbs are supporting Macy’s Stores across the country for major energy savings. Reportedly, Macy’ installed new LED lamps that use about 73 percent less energy to replace 117,000 traditional incandescent light bulbs in 86 stores. It estimates about 16,200 megawatts per hour every year in total energy savings.

The GE Energy Smart® 9-watt LED light bulb can last more than 22 years, surviving perennial gifts such as sweaters or flannel shirts by at least a decade. The 9-watt GE Energy Smart® LED bulb with a unique omni-directional light output is able to replace a 40-watt incandescent bulb in desk, bedside or hallway lamps.

Industry sources reported about one fifth of LCD TVs purchases in the US market was LED-backlit LCD TVs in 3Q10, which was up from 17.9% 2Q10 and from 4% during 3Q09. The result was benefit from LED-backlit LCD TVs’ advantages, such as their thinner form, improved picture quality, better color saturation, power savings and other green attributes, which also closely connected with TV and panel makers’ paying on the product differentiation, innovation, low power consumption and so on.

China's central government held its first-ever open tender for LED products in November. 28 Chinese-funded companies have won the bid, and many of them have promised to use Epistar's crystalline grains, which means that Epistar grasped the opportunity to join the government-funded green light projects.

Recently, it’s reportedly Yangzhou of Jiangsu Province would end procurement subsidization for MOCVD equipment in July of 2011. Epitaxial wafer plants registered after the date would no longer receive the subsidy of CNY10 million (US$1.5 million) per MOCVD machine. Yangzhou city officials indicated that Yangzhou currently had 20,000 LED street lamps and would rise to 30,000 units in April of 2011. The city government was looking to adjust the 33% subsidy for LED street lamp installation cost.

With demand LED backlight applications on the rise, Taiwan LED chip packager Unity Opto Technology expected monthly revenues to hit NT$700 billion (US$23.39 million) in 1Q 11. And the Full-year revenues for 2011 were expected to raise 80% to NT$12 billion from 2010.

Based on the potential 500 billion yuan (NT$2.3 trillion) opportunity in China's next five-year development plan which includes upgrading the LED industry as one of its major goals, a Taiwanese LED street lamp alliance has signed a letter of intent with a Taiwan affairs task force under China's Fujian provincial government to set up a world-class LED lighting company.  

It’s reported that Sharp Corporation has designed and will introduce the LR56001 LED controller for LED ceiling lights which can independently control up to three types of LED lights including cool white, warm white, and night light with each at the desired level of brightness. By adjusting the brightness of cool white and warm white lights ,the user is able to change the color emitted, anywhere from a warm red color to a cool light blue color.

Amtran Technology expected its revenues would reach NT$100 billion (US$3.34 billion) in 2011, with subsidiary Raken Technology completing capacity expansion in 2011 and bringing annual revenues to US$3 billion. A leader of the company noted, 4Q10 would be the most profitable period in 2010 following record sales in November and strong performance in December. Hi Score Corporation has supported a second round of Energy Saving EcoGreenBulb T5 Retrofit Kits as the addition to the original kits delivered earlier this year in Trump Towers of Sunny Isles, Florida. It estimated the conversion will reduce the energy required to light these areas by more than 50%.

With its LED streetlight, Wipro Lighting has won the ‘Design for Asia Merit Recognition Award 2010’.It is the first Indian company that recognizes the most influential design in Asia. The Orio streetlight features a LED technology and minimizes up to 50% of power consumption. The lighting solution is available in 24, 18, and 12 W versions with high power LEDs. The Orio offers 90% recyclability, energy efficiency and durability.

Recently, a lamp manufacturer Artemide has designed a table lamp called Egle,which features adjustable direct LED lighting and is available in polished white, black, or chrome finishes. It’s able to old tiny objects and spreads light when the lamp is adjusted downward.

Recently, LG Display CEO reported that 8.5 G TFT-LCD panel production plants were more competitive than 7.5G and LG Display would become the largest panel supplier in China. He said LG Display would discuss the decision to set up an advanced plant in China and he thought making an early start did not guarantee advantage.

Recently, Formosa Epitaxy announced the inauguration of its LED chip subsidiary based in Yangzhou, China, which could become China's largest epitaxial wafer maker in 2012 when it completed the installation of 50 MOCVD machines. Formosa Epitaxy chairman noted, the company expected LED chip demand return to the levels of the first half of 2010 in February and March of 2011, and mass shipments for applications in tablet PCs would begin in February as well.

TDK has used LED technology to upgrade its iconic neon sign at London’s Piccadilly Circus. The LED display which nearly has 100 square metres was jointly created by Barco, project management company MT² and system integrator Beaver Solutions. Barco’s 16mm TF-16BK LED tiles were used for the display. A web-based Scala content management system, supplied by Beaver was also used in the sign.

Haifa, the third largest city of Israel has created an eco-friendly tree to celebrate this Christmas in the city’s center. Created by Israeli designer Hadas Itzcovitch and her father, artist Ernest Itzcovitch, the new 38-foot Christmas tree made entirely of 5,480 recycled water bottles and other plastic objects donated by its residents and illuminated by LED-certified lights , to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Renesas Electronics America has released its R2A20134 LED driver IC which can supply high efficiency and a high power factor at low cost for LED lighting applications.   Renesas Electronics’ voltage step-down control technology (single-stage) provides a high line-to-ground voltage. Besides, the ability to select low-voltage MOSFETs (voltage tolerance of only 500 volts (V) to 300 V, rather than the typical 700 V) further contributes to lower system cost.

Veeco Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ: VECO) announced that Thomas Gutierrez has been appointed to its Board of Directors.
