AXT to Present at the 2008 AmTech Research LED Technology Investment Conference

AXT, a manufacturer of compound semiconductor substrates, announced that Robert G. Ochrym, Vice President of Business Development, will present at the American Technology Research 2008 LED Technology Investment Forum at the New York Palace Hotel in New York, NY on Thursday, May 15th, at 9:30 a.m. ET. Ochrym will address the requirements and outlook of gallium arsenide (GaAs) semi-conducting substrates for the LED industry. A copy of his presentation is available on AXT's website, the company noted in a release.

Shanghai believes in bright idea to save energy

Chinese suppliers: LED market to grow

The market for light-emitting diodes is set to grow significantly throughout the year despite an economic downturn, according to Chinese suppliers. A survey of LED light fixture suppliers carried out by Global Sources revealed that 81 per cent believed that exports would grow at ten per cent or more over the coming year. Some 67 per cent even predicted expert sales to be even higher, with expectations reaching 20 per cent or more. The main driver for the export growth was cited as a growing range of LED-based lighting applications.

The LED sector in Taiwan generally had weaker-than-expected sales in April despite players' optimism that orders would be picking up in the second quarter.LED packagers Unity Opto Technology and Harvatek saw their April sales drop sequentially.Unity said shipments of applications for LED backlighting dipped in April amid clients' inventory adjustments. The company's April revenues declined 4.6% sequentially to NT$292 million (US$9.58 million), which nevertheless represents a 24% on-year increase.

Taiwan-based LED maker Wanstar lands 16,000 unit street light order

It’s reported that Taiwan-based LED maker Wanstar Technology has announced the company will start shipping its newly developed LED street lights to a US-based lighting company and expects to complete 16,000 units before February of 2009. Wanstar's new LED street light features a heatsink cover, which can maintain the light's temperature at around 50-degrees Fahrenheit in an average environment temperature of 68-degrees Fahrenheit.

Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp (2409.TW), the world's third-largest LCD maker, said on Friday its board has approved a plan to set up a T$1.5 billion ($50 million) company making light emitting diode (LED) backlights for displays.
