Power management company Eaton today announced it joined the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Center for the Development and Application of Internet of Things Technologies (CDAIT), an Atlanta-based research center dedicated to developing and applying Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. As a member company with a Lighting Division based in the Atlanta area, Eaton provides Georgia Tech students and faculty with lighting expertise and hands-on training to help support research that further enables transformational IoT technologies.

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hitoshi Ochi) and National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS; Location: Tsukuba-shi, Ibaraki; President: Kazuhito Hashimoto) today announced that the Patent Reexamination Board of the State Intellectual Property Office of the P.R.C. (SIPO) has dismissed every aspect of the claim, filed on November 2, 2016, by China’s Intematix Suzhou Lighting Co., Ltd.* 1 (Intematix Suzhou Lighting), requesting for the invalidation of the Chinese patent (No. ZL201110066517.7; “the patent”* 2 ) for red phosphor, a material used extensively in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), owned by MCC and NIMS. The board approved the validity of the patent, and MCC and NIMS received the written decision effective May 10. 

Tri-State LED, a division of Revolution Lighting Technologies, today announced it has recently completed an LED lighting retrofit for AERCO International, Inc., a leading manufacturer of commercial condensing boilers, high efficiency water heaters and energy recovery solutions. The retrofit occurred throughout the company’s corporate headquarters, including their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, located in Blauvelt, New York, retrofitting existing lighting that is expected to reduce the facility’s lighting energy use by more than 65%.

Lumileds announced the appointment of Steve Barlow as Senior Vice President (SVP) of its Illumination Business, effective May 22. Barlow rejoins Lumileds from Cree, Inc., where he served as SVP of sales and business development, responsible for the lighting division products, channels and revenue growth. 

Elemental LED, an engineering and technology-based manufacturer of LED lighting solutions, and The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) announced the relocation of Elemental LED’s U.S. manufacturing and R&D operations to Reno, Nevada. The company is moving its corporate headquarters into an adjacent property located in the South Meadows area of Reno and expects to be operational by end of the third quarter of this year. Elemental LED plans to hire up to 100 employees over the next two years.

Micro LED, the next generation display technology, has lighten up a new path for the LED industry. As global key players continue to jump on the Micro LED bandwagon, a whole supply chain has gradually taken shape. The development process of related applications has been ramped up, making possible an earlier than expected volume production for Micro LED-based large screen TVs. However, there are still many challenges lying ahead of commercial developments. Among them, two key elements play a pivotal role.

Translucent PEDOT sensors can be used in space-restricted applications where previous methods of backlighting (light guide film or side fire LEDs) are impractical.
