Eco-friendly purification of water – UV light is already being used to kill water-borne germs but the light sources used for this purpose are still predominantly mercury vapor lamps. UV LEDs have so far proved unattractive for reasons of cost. The aim of the UNIQUE project funded by the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Media, Energy and Technology is therefore to develop high-power UV LEDs for industrial use. This accomplishment is the result of a joint development agreement launched in 2015, enabling cost/performance advantages that could not be achieved with smaller wafers.

Achieving efficiencies greater than 98% in conventional Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuits is challenging. The major hurdle is fixed diode bridge losses. An option to overcome this is to use silicon MOSFETs in place of the diodes to achieve efficiencies of 99% or more. However, this BTPPFC approach suffers from poor reverse recovery performance, is suitable only for low power, and requires complicated control parameters.
