San’an Opto announced the company will be purchasing  advanced 20 single chamber or five four-chambered GaN MOCVD systems from international companies for its Xiamen subsidiary on Dec. 16, 2013. Xiamen San’an Opto has received RMB 24 million (US$ 3.95 million) subsidiaries for four four-chambered MOCVD systems, or about 30 percent of total subsidiaries on Dec. 13, 2013.

Osram Releases LED Power Packs for Projectors

Osram Opto Semiconductors is now launching two new high-power versions of the Osram Ostar Projection for projectors with a brightness of up to 1700 lumen. Thanks to their optimized product design they offer very high luminous flux from the available chip surface. Between 1000 and 8300 lumen can be produced depending on the color and the LED version. An antireflex coated glass cover instead of the usual lens, together with external optics, ensures that the light is very well bundled. The new LEDs are therefore ideally matched to the efficient lighting from various additional optics.

LEDinside: Direct-type LED TV Penetration Rate Surpasses 60% in 2014

Spurred by Chinese TV manufacturers’ demands, LED TV penetration rates reached 95% in 2013, according to LEDinside, a subsidiary of global research institute TrendForce. The organization estimates LED TV will completely replace CCFL by 2014, and annual LED TV shipment volume will grow at YOY 3% to 209 million. However, LED for backlight TV applications market value is expected to decrease 17% to US$ 2.41 billion. The main cause behind LED TVs growing shipment volume, but lower market value has been direct-type LED TVs reduced usage of LEDs and its high penetration rate of more than 60% in 2014. Compared to edge-type LED TVs, direct-type LED TVs only uses half the number of LEDs.
