Soraa has received an award from the U.S. Department of Energy for its outstanding work in the development of high-efficiency m-plane LEDs grown on low-defect density bulk GaN substrates. The company demonstrated a very high peak internal quantum efficiency (IQE of 88%), low efficiency droop (10% from 10Acm-2 to 100A.cm-2) and perfect wavelength stability (up to 200A.com-2) at a wavelength of 450nm LEDs. Soraa’s GaN on GaN LEDs handle more current and emit substantially more light (about ten times) per area of LED wafer material than the conventiona...

Laytec has upgraded in-situ GaN LED monitoring system. LED manufacturers would know the emission wavelength of the final device during MOCVD growth. Today, according to the Solid State Lighting road map, the wavelength variation across a wafer should be less than 1 nm. This means a less than 1 K (10C) variation of the GaN surface temperature during InGaN MQW growth. LayTec’s Pyro 400 is widely used for enabling fab-wide GaN surface temperature uniformity in many LED manufacturers production lines. Meanwhile, more complex LED structur...

Thermal Technology, a leading manufacturer of crystal growth equipment and high temperature furnace systems, recently shipped 14 K1 HB LED-grade sapphire crystal growers to a customer in Europe. The K1’s large 90kg sapphire boule is optimized for 4” and 6” cores used in LED production, with 8” cores possible.
“We continue to strengthen our position in the high brightness LED market,” says Matt Mede, Thermal Technology president and CEO. “Spending time at customers’ facilities throughout the world, I see our competitors sapphire tools unplugged and pushed aside, while ours are in production. The K1’s quality output speaks for itself.”
As Thermal Technology completes sapphire growth protocol transfer at its customers’ facilities, K1 sapphire production has increased dramatically with customers producing large, high quality boules and reporting yields of 4200mm TIE.
Over recent decades, LED lighting technology has developed and commercialized to the point that LEDs are replacing incandescent light bulbs in common lighting applications. Refined LED technology has led to the development of high brightness LEDs (HB LED) used in electronic display backlighting and other high tech applications. Producing HB LED requires higher quality, single sapphire substrate.
Thermal Technology’s Model K1 crystal grower is intended for HB LED substrate production. To satisfy the demand of the growing high quality sapphire market, Thermal Technology has successfully tripled their Santa Rosa, California manufacturing facility.
Thermal Technology is a global manufacturer of advance thermal processing systems, including crystal growth equipment, high temperature laboratory and production furnaces, hot presses and spark plasma as well as direct current sintering systems. Thermal Technology has 60 years of experience with more than 3000 installations in 40 countries.

With the UK languishing in the ‘relegation zone’ of Europe’s renewable energy league table behind countries such as Spain, Greece and France, you might have hoped that the UK Government would at least have been motivated to beat the French to introducing a night-time ban on lighting. New measures will come into force throughout France from July, and apply to both internal and external lighting of buildings. Interior lighting in offices must be switched off one hour after staff leave the premises; lighting in shops windows and commercial premises must be of...

In order to achieve this it was necessary to reduce the intensity of light in certain areas as well as being able to deal with different contrasts and reflections. He recalls how light had to be carefully controlled using lenses and reflectors to prevent it bouncing around any high gloss surfaces.
