Tyntek to Become Taiwan’s Third-largest LED Chipmaker by Acquiring Ubilux

Tyntek Corp, a Taiwan-based LED chipmaker, recently said it is seeking to acquire its local rival Ubilux to expand its output of LEDs for panel backlighting, according to an article on Taipei Times. The acquisition will make Tyntek Taiwan’s third-largest LED chipmaker, after Epistar Corp and Optotech Corp, the report said.

LED Price Trends for Q3 2009

In 3Q09, the increasing demand in LED backlight for NB and TV led to a shortage in the supply of LED chips, and stabilized their prices, only the white LEDs dropped slightly. Looking forward to Q4, as the capacity of upstream chips has not ramped up in time, and demand has not been met, LEDinside projects that the prices will likely remain flat amid the supply shortage. Similarly for white LEDs, the insufficient chip capacity limits price decline, and LEDinside indicates that the LED chip shortage and price stability is expected last till 1Q10.

Lite-On, Everlight to Supply LEDs for Samsung, LG’ LED TVS

Lite-On Technology and Everlight Electronics, two of the major LED providers based in Taiwan, are reportedly to be supplying SMD LEDs to Korea’s Samsung and LG from the fourth quarter this year. The two companies will supply LEDs mainly for backlights of 46/47- and 52/55-inch TVs to the two Korean TV makers, according to the report.

Rutgers University Installs Daktronics HD Football Display

Scarlet Knights fans this season are being treated to a state-of-the-art, high definition video display at Rutgers Stadium. Daktronics Inc. recently installed the new HD video display at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. 

Rutgers is currently in the midst of a $102 million expansion of the stadium to increase its seating capacity to 56,000. The LED displays are part of that expansion. Last season, three Daktronics ribbon displays were installed along the fascia of the stadium.

Samsung has invested USD 1 billion in its LED TV promotion campaign, bringing such TVs in the limelight of the market since the 2Q09. Other major TV brand vendor also raised their LED TV shipment targets for 2010, and launched capacity expansion plans at the same time. According to the research institute LEDinside, the total capital expenditure of Taiwan’s LED chipmakers will reach NTD 13.5 billion in 2009, a 24% growth compared to last year.

Cree Posts Strong 1Q Results, Outlook

Cree Inc. Tuesday posted first-quarter earnings and revenue well above market expectations, and forecast strong second-quarter results. The LED lighting manufacturer reported net income of $21 million, or 23 cents per share, on $169.1 million in revenue for its fiscal 2010 first quarter, ended Sept. 27. That's up from net income of $5.9 million, or 7 cents per share, on $140.4 million in revenue in the same period a year ago.
