Taiwan's listed LED manufacturers to record total revenue of NT$565.2 billion in June 2009, Says LEDinside

According to the industry research institute LEDinside, in June 2009, Taiwan’s listed LED manufacturers recorded total revenue of NT$565.2 billion a 9.5% growth compared to NT$516 billion in May (+4.7% YoY). LED chip makers’ total revenue amounted to NT$2.453 billion, up by 13.9% MoM; and LED packagers posted NT$3.198 billion in revenue, a 6.4% growth MoM.

LEDs Illuminate Blissfield Bridge in The U.S.

Blissfield Parks and Recreation installed new LED lights provided by the Blissfield Kiwanis to the footbridge joining Ellis and Bachmayer parks in Blissfield, MI. The new lights on the wooden pedestrian footbridge at Ellis Park could beautify Blissfield for more than 30 years. The 300 feet of light-emitting diode (LED) rope lights recently installed on the footbridge were purchased by the Blissfield Kiwanis Club.

Venture Capitals Bullish about Energy Efficient Lighting

Some venture capital firms in the U.S. are glowing about energy efficient lighting companies and they are investing large sums of money in this sector, according to an article on Wall Street Journal. New York-based Braemar Energy Ventures and San Francisco-based VantagePoint Venture Partners are both targeting $50 million of investments at energy efficient lighting companies currently. And VantagePoint may increase that amount by another $50 million within the next year.

Allegeny County Jail Implements ALSI's LED Lighting to Reduce Costs, Improve Security

The Challenge The Allegheny County Jail, a 900,000 square foot Pennsylvania facility that opened in 1996, faced expensive power and maintenance costs associated with outdated lighting in the jail’s 35 inmate housing pods, and elsewhere in the facility. The jail also faced a security issue because the light fixtures hung from the ceiling in a manner that blocked some security camera views. The existing lights were 2x2 High Intensity Discharge fixtures (HID), using a 250 W metal halide lamp, with additional ballast wattage of 45 W.

Samsung Purchases US$7.5B Worth of LED TV Components from Taiwan

Samsung Electronics, currently the world’s top TV supplier, is estimated to buy US$7.5 billion worth of components from Taiwan this year for its LED backlit LCD TVs, according to the company, reported The Taiwan Economic News. Samsung plans to ship 2,000,000 units of LED TVs by the end of 2009, a volume estimated to account for 10% of its total TV shipments of the year. The company has delivered 400,000 units in three months after the launch in April, snatching up 90% of the global market.

South Korea to Invest $85 billion in Green Industries

South Korea plans to spend 107 trillion won ($84.5 billion), or 2 percent of its annual GDP, in green industries over the next five years, the presidential office said in a statement on Monday. The investment, mainly for encouraging environment-related industries and technologies such as renewable energy, LEDs (light-emitting diodes), smart power grids and hybrid cars, is expected to create up to 1.81 million jobs, the government said.

Smart LED Streetlights in San Francisco
