Smart lighting is playing a pivotal role in unlocking the power of the IoT and smart building applications beyond lighting. An intelligent, sensor-laden lighting system can form the central nervous system of a building, enabling smart lighting and other current and future IoT applications.

The technology companies Osram and Continental have successfully concluded their negotiations on the Osram Continental GmbH joint venture.

Osram is strengthening its electronic component business with the acquisition of BAG electronics, a Trilux subsidiary. BAG specializes in LED modules and software for innovative LED lighting solutions. The company, based in Arnsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, was previously part of the Trilux Group. Following the takeover, its 380 employees have moved to Osram. At the same time, a strategic five-year supply contract including a minimum sales volume has been agreed, with Osram supplying Trilux with components for use in its lights. BAG generated revenues of around €50 million in 2017.

Light and Building 2018, one of the largest trade shows in Europe, gathers over 2,700 exhibitors and their advanced lighting and building automation technologies in Frankfurt. Those technologies reflect the highly dynamic nature of the sector and the rising demand for smart life and efficient energy management around the world. Light + Building 2018, the largest trade fair for lighting and building services technology in Europe, officially begins on March 18. Ingolstadt car manufacturer Audi uses the expertise of Osram Opto Semiconductors in the front lighting of its new flagship. The Oslon Compact PL for adaptive front lighting has been installed in the Audi A8 for the first time. The Oslon Black Flat S in its 3-chip version provides an extended beam range. In addition, the tried and tested Topled is used in the sedan’s daytime running lights.

Osram enters a partnership with Nedap, developer and supplier of smart technological solutions, endorsing the DEXAL Technology (Data Exchange for Advanced Lighting).

Osram announced its Wireless Site Lighting Control (WSLC) Module, extending the ENCELIUM EXTEND Networked Light Management System capability to a building’s surroundings or site such as parking lots, pathways and private roadways. 

LED lighting industry has been developing towards smart lighting in recent years in order to avoid involving in price wars. In the era of IoT, lighting is no longer individual product, but a systematical solution. Manufacturers are trying to enhance the added value of lighting equipment by integrating functions like Internet of Things and ambient sensing. International manufacturers such as Philips, Osram, and Opple Lighting, a Chinese maker, have all invested heavily in smart lighting R&D to lay the foundation for future market.

Currently, automotive lighting is reported to be the most promising and most mature application market for OLED lighting. Planning for the new LED lighting system for the world’s largest church has entered its final phase: The lighting calculations and simulations have been successfully completed. In the basilica, the LED lighting system has been tested in many areas, and everyone involved is really pleased with the results. Tests show that the illumination level of the domes is 10 times brighter than before. The new indirect lighting system also eliminates unsightly drop shadows on the circular inscription, which is carved into the wall below the cornices of the basilica.

LEDVANCE has successfully delivered 25 million energy-efficient LED lamps to Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), the Indian government agency in charge of executing India‘s UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) initiative.

Osram is teaming up with Boston Children’s Hospital to ‘Light Up’ the hospital and the City of Boston in an effort to support patients and their families during these cold winter months. The three-year partnership kicks off today with the announcement of the inaugural city-wide event, Light Up Our Hospital, Ignited by Osram.

The London School of Economics Configuring Light research group and LUCI, the international network of cities on urban lighting, along with Osram, have launched the joint research project "Pathways to Municipal Smart Lighting". At this year’s North American International Auto Show’s AutoMobili-D 2018, Osram Opto Semiconductors is demonstrating how its high-power infrared pulse lasers are helping speed the adoption of autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). 

Veeco Instruments announced that OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH has ordered a multi-reactor Propel High Volume Manufacturing (HVM) Gallium Nitride (GaN) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) System.

VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser) technology has been at the center stage in the tech world of late, in the wake of the debut of the new iPhone X, which contains a 3D sensing module with VCSELs as its core components. Their importance even made Apple fork over quite an amount of money to secure some of the VCSEL shipment from Finisar, a laser chip producer.

Osram Opto Semiconductors has added the new Oslon Compact PL to its portfolio of products for the automotive sector. The LED is particularly suitable for use in vehicle headlights.
