The new Osconiq product line from Osram Opto Semiconductors will cover professional applications including linear and area lighting, high and low bay lighting and street lighting. The familiar Duris P products, which are currently being used for these applications, will be transferred to the new Osconiq line. The first member of the new family is the Osconiq P 2226 which, thanks to its exceptional robustness, extensive color portfolio and scalable current, offers impressive versatility.  

Matrix light not only contributes to greater road safety but also gives headlight designers greater freedom thanks to its smaller dimensions. This technology is therefore very much on the march. To meet the demands of the automotive industry for more and more compact smart headlights Osram has taken this technology an important stage further with the development of innovative SMARTRIX modules. SMARTRIX is an amalgam of “smart” and “matrix”. “By using new materials for the lens systems we have been able to make the SMARTRIX modules even smaller and more durable, so our customers have even more freedom in designing their headlights”, explained Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO Specialty Lighting at Osram.

Osram has agreed to acquire Digital Lumens Inc., a U.S. company based in Boston, Massachusetts that specializes in industrial IoT solutions. Founded in 2008, Digital Lumens employs 65 people and in the last fiscal year generated sales in the mid-double-digit millions (USD). The Digital Lumens software platform can be used to run applications covering everything from intelligent lighting control, energy use, and security systems to the measurement of environmental parameters such as air quality. The cloud-based platform is compatible with components and hardware of other manufacturers. Digital Lumens has built a strong customer base for industrial IoT solutions, with more than 2,500 installations. 

The Japanese start-up company FOVE offers users a virtual reality headset that integrates eye tracking as a novel means of interaction. Tiny ChipLEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors provide the infrared illumination to track the user’s direction of gaze and eye movements.  

Apollon from Osram is a diverse, VDU-compliant (UGR19) LED luminaire for electrical contractors who place importance on both an intelligent light concept and many extras. The luminaires have the appearance of homogeneous 'windows of light' that can be grouped together to create light ceilings. Luminous flux was increased by 15% to 4,000 lumens compared to its predecessor model. The luminaire is therefore an efficient and economical replacement not only for 3-lamp but even for 4-lamp 4x18W (T8) and 4x14W (T5) louvre luminaires. 

Osram Opto Semiconductors successfully held a breaking ground ceremony for Wuxi factory's phase two expansion project in the Wuxi High-Tech Industrial Development Zone on August 8th.

Osram, a leading global lighting and technology company, today announced its OPTOTRONIC Dual-Mode Programmable Emergency LED Driver, the market’s first programmable single-driver solution for emergency Solid State Lighting fixtures, which offers the ability to program and customize the light output in both normal and emergency operations.

Osram has acquired a strategic 25.1 percent share in LeddarTech Inc., a Canadian company that develops a proprietary LiDAR technology integrated into semiconductors and sensor modules for self-driving cars and driver-assistance systems. LeddarTech specializes in solid-state LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) systems that use infrared light to monitor the area around them, and its advanced optical sensing technology is highly complementary with Osram’s semiconductor products. The two companies already work together and Osram has now made an investment in LeddarTech in the mid double-digit million euros.

"Osram's operating performance continues to be very strong. We are forging ahead with our transformation into a systems provider. By acquiring a stake in LeddarTech, we are paving the way for success in the key future market of autonomous driving," said Olaf Berlien, CEO of OSRAM Licht AG.

Osram continues its transformation by establishing state-of-the-art technology at its German sites, based on the key points set out in the ‘Zukunftskonzept OSRAM’ (“Future Concept OSRAM”) agreed to by the company and the employee representatives. The aim is to sustain the company’s growth path, which began two years ago with the launch of Osram’s ‘Diamond’ innovation and growth initiative. The transformation will also lead to changes in the employment structure in Germany. Overall, the number of jobs in Germany is set to increase over the coming years.

For a long time, Nichia, Osram Opto., Cree, Toyota Gosei and Lumileds have jointly shaped an enormous and powerful patent shield with cross-license agreements within the world LED industry and the five lighting goliaths have been charging, more or less, whoever tried to sell LED products abroad. However, as those patents are about to expire, Taiwan- and Korea-based Companies rise with their new patents and the expansion of Chinese businesses is posing threats, the industry is slowing transitioning away from the old oligopoly.

The Osram Opto Semiconductors Duris S family just got larger. Osram Opto Semiconductors introduces its first high power single mode infrared laser. With an emission wavelength of 850nm, the SPL TR85 matches both camera sensors and silicon photodetectors. Originally a general lighting business unit of Osram, LEDvance, with the support of its new owners, extended its product line from standardized and traditional light sources to advanced LED lamps and intelligent products for smart lighting.

Both of Ledvance’s new products, exclusive to Apple HomeKit, will hit shelves September 1. Consumers can connect the Classic A60 LED lamp and flexible LED light strip for indoors to the Apple Home app in just a few simple steps. They can then use either the app or – even easier – Siri to control the lights. Even better, no gateway or bridge is needed for the standard functions. With Apple TV or iPad (iOS 10 or later) acting as a home hub, owners can control their lights remotely or include them in automations.

For the first time, Osram Opto Semiconductors has integrated two LED chips and a lens into a single module. The compact Oslux S 2.1 multi-chip LED brings together all the company's extensive technical expertise into a new LED product for camera flash applications. With its brightness of 125 lux, the Oslux S 2.1 provides uniform illumination of photos and video recordings from mobile devices such as smartphones.

Traxon Technologies, an Osram brand and global leader in dynamic lighting, has announced the launch of Dot XLQ-8 RGBW, a fully customizable, dynamic LED node solution for a wide range of lighting and media applications. The high brightness and intelligent four-colors-per-node RGBW media dot design supports Ethernet communication and Remote Device Management (RDM), making it ideal for even the most complex lighting scenarios.

Osram has agreed to acquire U.S.-based LED Engin Inc. in San Jose, California. The company has approximately 30 employees and annual sales of around USD 10 million. LED Engin specializes in ultra-bright, ultra-compact solid state lighting solutions for variety of specialty markets including entertainment lighting, ultraviolet, horticulture, tunable white and medical lighting applications. Its products mainly incorporate LED chips from Osram Opto Semiconductors.

The Punctoled product range from Osram scores in basic retail trade applications thanks to its outstanding price-performance ratio and short payback times. The family is now being added to with the track spotlight Punctoled Track and the directional spotlight Punctoled Spot. Both are ideal for simple accent lighting in the shop sector and feature good colour rendering and high levels of uniformity.

The new SFH 4055 from Osram Opto Semiconductors is based on the company’s proven Firefly platform, used widely for LEDs in the visible spectrum. The new transmitter, Osram’s smallest side-looking infrared LED to date, has a wavelength of 850 nm and is primarily targeted at eye-tracking systems in augmented and virtual reality headsets.

BMW Motorsport will be using biologically effective light from Osram during the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring in Germany, taking place on May 27 and 28. As new official partner of BMW Motorsport, Osram will be supplying activating light for drivers and engineers both before and during the race, enhancing their alertness and boosting their concentration. 

A new paradise for climbing fans has been available since mid-2016 in Telfs, located around 30 kilometres from Innsbruck in Austria. At the "Bergstation", recreational sportsmen, hobby/professional climbers and boulderers can scale 80 routes within a climbing area of more than 1,000 square metres both indoors and outdoors. Osram developed a customised, high-performance and efficient LED lighting solution for the climbing centre, enabling cost-efficient operation of the system and contributing to climbers having ideal sight and therefore a safe grip throughout.

The long-awaited sale of LEDVANCE, originally the general lighting lamps business of German lighting giant Osram, to the Chinese investment consortium, consisting of the strategic investor IDG Capital, MLS, and Yiwu State-Owned Assets Operation Center (Yiwu), was finally completed on March 3, 2017. At the LFI 2017 held in Philadelphia, LEDinside met with LEDVANCE’s CEO Jes Munk Hansen to talk about the recent deal and its strategic position in the lighting market.
