Chapel Hill, North Carolina, U.S., has joined the LED City Program, a worldwide joint effort initiated by Cree, a leader in the LED industry, to promote and deploy energy-efficient LED lighting all over the world.

Illumination Power and control specialist Endicott Research Group (ERG), known for its expertise in powering CCFL and LED backlights for LCDs, is developing new LED driver solutions for the solid state lighting market.  Leveraging technology developed for its CCFL inverters and LED backlight drivers, ERG will be introducing a family of Smart Force™ LED drivers that combine full-function power supplies with energy-efficient controllers for commercial, industrial, architectural and other SSL applications.

The new Infrared Ostar Lighting LED from Osram Opto Semiconductors provides 3.5 W of optical output power at 1A with six powerful thin-film chips and a hemispherical. This week, the city of Canton in Ohio, U.S., and American Electric Power will launch an experimental program to switch high pressure sodium lights with LED lights in four “cobra head” street lights over Market Avenue near 40th Street. Two years ago, Canton replaced the sodium lights in the decorative lampposts along a one-mile stretch of Tuscarawas Street with LED lights. Five years ago, the city began switching traffic signals from incandescent bulbs to LED lights.

University of Miami has joined the LED University(tm) program to install new LED pole lights to improve walkway illuminatin on the main campus and retrofitting LED lighting at various interior locations, according to Cree, a leader in the LED lighting field and also the initiator of the program.

GlasWeld, an international glass repair solutions provider, today announced that its Technical Services Division is in final testing stages of ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LED) for its auto glass repair curing systems.

OptoElectronix announced Wednesday a new series of small, high-efficient, 180-degree LED modules. The round, 60mm (2.35-inch) diameter, aluminum modules are precisely engineered for optimal thermal management. They integrate the LED, lens, and electronics, and are rated for 50,000 hours. Mouser Electronics,  Inc., an electronic component distributor known for its rapid introduction of the newest products, announced on Tuesday to have signed an agreement with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors to distribute the lighting, sensor, and visualization sectors, adding to its existing portfolio of OSRAM’s high-powered, mid-powered, and standard LEDs as well as infrared and sensor products.

Neoti, the regional digital signage network in Bluffton, Indiana, has recently introduced its latest product, a 9 foot ×12 foot mobile LED screen that is 8 feet high and is housed and transported in a 20-foot trailer. Nomad, which is the name of the screen, can be taken nearly anywhere in the trailer and is able to display any type of signal from static images to live video at sporting events. It can operate for continuous 28 hours on its own diesel-powered generator.

Braemar Energy Ventures has invested in Nuventix Inc., a cooling systems company in Texas, according to the company. Braemar contributed $3 million of the $8 million total that closes out the Series C round for Nuventix. Another $1 million was from Uniquest of Korea and the remaining come from an agreement with Silicon Valley Bank that makes $4 million credit available to the company.

Osram Sylvania has opened an expanded, multi-million dollar Clean Lab LED center on April 8 that is dedicated to solid-state lighting research in Beverly, Massachusetts. Osram received $2M award in US DOE Solid State Lighting Research and Development Program last month. And the award will allow the company to fund an LED replacement for a halogen MR-16 spotlight and research on phosphors for white LEDs.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport will have 2,000 incandescent bulbs on a runway replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting, supported by a $4.5 million stimulus grant from The Federal Aviation Administration. A total USD 1.1 billion stimulus grant has been handed out by the Federal Aviation Administration for airport projects. And RDU will use its grant, announced Wednesday, to upgrade lighting on the 10,000-foot runway adjacent to Terminal 2.

Nova Scotia, Canada, has launched a pilot project to use energy-efficient LED streetlights replacing the conventional streetlights in several parts of the province, aiming to reduce energy consumption.

The option to have LED lights replacing the streetlights on Main Street, Romeo, Michigan, U.S. has been discussed by the Romeo Downtown Development Authority (DDA). This idea was brought out by Janine Saputo the DDA Coordinator after she looked into light-emitting diode (LED) lights as a energy efficient lighting option when pursuing a downtown revitalization grant opportunity from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).

The Willis Independent School District in Texas, USA is considering posting LED signs on every campus in the district.  The idea was brought to the school board this week by Todd Cabra, a factory representative from Affordable Signs and LEDs, and also a parent of two WISD students, after he noticed A.R. Turner Elementary, the school of his youngest daughter, did not have an LED sign like Brabham Middle School or Meador Elementary School.

Cypress semiconductor has recently developed PowerPSoC which has been claimed by the company to be the first single chip device to control and drive high power LEDs. PowerPSoC features four integrated, independently operated 32V/1A mosfets based on Cypress' PSoC platform, with up to four programmable hysteretic controllers providing controlled current output. Floating load buck, floating load buck-boost, and boost converter topologies provide design flexibility. The device also supports 16bit dimming.

Ilumisys, Inc., a provider of solid state lighting technology and products, has recently claimed Patent No. 7,510,299, which has been issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the replacement of fluorescent tubes with LEDs.

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC) has released on Wednesday two new highly-efficient white LED drivers, TB62730WLG and TB62750FTG, both of which designed to drive white LEDs for backlight use in LCDs. The two LED drivers were among several products Toshiba launched yesterday for expanding its Mobile Strategic Initiative, a product and customer support program aimed to facilitate ease of design for new mobile phones and other portable devices.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), a global leader in product safety testing and certification services, announced Wednesday to become a strategic partner of Luminaire Testing Laboratory, Inc. (LTL) . And it has also become the first Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory to provide Energy Star testing of LED products.
