PerkinElmer, Inc. (PKI), a global leader focused on improving the health and safety of people and the environment, announced it has bought Opto Technology Inc., a supplier of LED based lighting components and subsystems, as PerkinElmer looks to broaden its presence in the LED lighting market. PerkinElmer did not disclose a purchase price for the Illinois-based company.

Luminus Devices Inc. announced that it will make components for LEDs lamps that give off white light with Nichia. That makes LEDs attractive for a wide range of uses. Until now, Luminus has made chips for colored LED lights that go into projectors and TVs.

Introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the new Ford Mustang boasts the latest lighting technology by OSRAM. The American sports car, which hits the market in 2010, features variable LED interior lighting with OSRAM TOPLED. The JOULE LED system is the basis for the American muscle car’s rear signal lighting and gives the car a modern look as well as added efficiency and security.

Bridgelux, Inc., a leading supplier of energy-saving LED technology, has introduced an LED array product line which provides high performance, compact and cost-effective light sources for solid-state lighting (SSL). Bridgelux says that its LED Arrays have been specifically developed to provide lamp and luminaire manufacturers with a solution that will simplify system level integration thereby reducing the system cost. The array can be used in applications including task, accent, spot, track, down light, wide area and security lighting.

Cree, Inc. announced revenue of $147.6 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2009, ended Dec. 28, 2008. This represents a 24% increase compared to revenue of $119.0 million reported for the second quarter of fiscal 2008 and a 5% increase compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2009. Revenue included $5.6 million in patent licensing fees which were not factored into previously announced targets.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released the first draft of Energy Star criteria for integral LED lamps and has posted these potential criteria on its web site. DOE has also explained why integral LED lamps are being included in the Energy Star program at this point and given an overview of the approach the agency took to decide on certain criteria. Orb Optronix has measured commercially available solid state lighting products (SSL) that exceed risk group category RG-1 blue light hazard limits in the ANSI/IESNA RP-27.3-07 ‘Recommended Practice for Photobiological Safety for Lamps, Risk Group Classification and Labeling’ standard along with IEC 62471:2006. The RG-2 categorization cautions against direct viewing of light sources with the human eye.

It’s reported that Nexxus Lighting, Inc. has begun production and sale of its new Array Lighting brand of LED lamps including Array Par 30, Par 16, G4, MR16 and GU10. The new Array Lighting Par 30, Par 16 and G4 LED are the first bulbs to begin production and offer direct replacement for conventional incandescent, halogen and CFL Par/R light bulbs and T3 bi-pin bulbs.

It’s reported that Dialight, has introduced a new series of reverse-mount LED indication products created for the needs of electronic and industrial equipment manufacturers. Designed to help eliminate mixed-technology PC board processing, the 597 series microLED SMD LEDs are RoHS compliant and compatible with automatic placement equipment as well as surface-mount reflow soldering processes. They also feature a gold plated termination finish.

The biggest obstacle of improving LED NB's penestration rate is the high cost of LED backlight modules. The price of LED backlight modules is still 70% higher than CCFL backlight. The reason why a LED backlight module remains highly priced is the issues of its brightness and patent. In the past few years, LEDs have made huge advances in energy efficiency. Industry sources and outside experts say LEDs are now the most energy-efficient lighting source available. They use far less energy than other bulbs, last a lot longer, and cost less to use over their lifetime.

Ohio East Manufacturing, Randolph, Ohio, has announced it is offering a LED lighting system that is completely sealed against the elements. The system uses sealed “plug-in” connections designed to prevent moisture infiltration and subsequent corrosion from compromising the functionality of the trailer's lighting system, the company says. This moisture-barrier lighting system is now standard equipment on all East aluminum flatbed, dump and transfer trailers.

Crews with Daktronics and Pittsburg State University have burned the midnight oil for the last several days to ensure that the new "Jungle-tron" at Carnie Smith Stadium was ready for use Saturday during Pitt State’s home opener with Missouri Southern.“It was probably pretty typical for a project of this size,” said Daktronics project manager Tom Manier on Saturday.
