As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches in China on June 1, 2014, the market has entered a new luminaire discount season, according to a report by Chinese-language media Kyushu Building Network. Top luminaire brands have all increased prices because of rising raw material and logistic costs. However, since lighting products are not daily commodities most consumers have been less sensitive towards incremental price increases. Some industry experts project prices will be up as much as 10 percent next year.

Osram’s latest 2013 financial report revealed LED sales had a 29 percent revenue share, however, the German company projected the figure will “exceed 50 percent” by 2017.

China’s LED application market scale reached RMB 200 billion (Us $32.1 billion) in 2013, with residential lighting making up around 30 percent, according to statistics by the Guangya Academy of Lighting Research in Guangzhou. LED lighting prices have dropped a staggering 70 percent over the past two years, with LED 3W bulbs priced at around RMB 14. The market has already accepted LED bulb price/performance ratio. Indoor lighting has become the largest driver for LED application market growth in China. 

China LED packaging market scale reached US $7.2 billion in 2013, according to the latest China LED package market report from LEDinside, a division of research organization Trendforce. China become a prime market for global LED packaging manufacturers, who are speeding up efforts to acquire bigger market share. San’an Opto announced the company will be purchasing  advanced 20 single chamber or five four-chambered GaN MOCVD systems from international companies for its Xiamen subsidiary on Dec. 16, 2013. Xiamen San’an Opto has received RMB 24 million (US$ 3.95 million) subsidiaries for four four-chambered MOCVD systems, or about 30 percent of total subsidiaries on Dec. 13, 2013.

China’s LED luminaire market faces serious copying issues, Chinese-language China Building Materials quoted a man in charge of a famous luminaire store in China. Some small enterprises dumping of fake LED luminares on the market has interfered with normal luminaire prices, according to the article. Small manufacturers are highly capable of imitating large brands; do not require R&D design fees or costs; and can quickly produce these replicated luminaires. It is difficult to differentiate these products from appearance alone.
