Formosa continue to install MOCVDs, while Tekcore slows capacity expansion

LCD chipmaker Formosa Epitaxy reported October 2010 revenues of NT$400.72 million (US$13.31 million), down 0.04% sequentially but up 58.86% on year. In November, the company pointed out that demand for TV backlighting was picking up on which revenues depended, but the growth was not as significant as in 2009, and December revenues were expected to drop as clients went through inventory stock checks.

Himax 3Q10 revenues decrease 26.3% sequentially

TFT LCD driver IC maker Himax Technologies 3Q10 revenues were US$138 million, down 26.3% sequentially but still meeting its adjusted forecast. And gross margin increased 2.5pp to 22.9%. Quarterly net income came to US$400,000. Non-driver IC products accounted for 8.4% in 3Q revenues.

Barco Released LED-lit, DLP-based Video Walls with an Improved LED Engine

Visualization specialist Barco has released a new line of LED-lit, DLP-based video walls with an improved LED engine. The new series features an advanced heat management system based on liquid cooling technology, which brings the LED temperature down to the optimal level. This results in a significantly longer lifetime of the projection system, amounting to 80,000 hours of continuous operation in eco-mode – or a 35% improvement over competing video walls.

Avago Technologies has introduced cyan-colored high-power ASMT-JC11 and ASMT-AC00 1-Watt LEDs optimized for traffic signals as well as sign backlighting and architectural, commercial and decorative lighting applications at the Electronica 2010 trade fair. The new LEDs address space constraints in applications with one of the industry’s smallest footprints of 5 mm by 4 mm by 1.85 mm for the ASMT-JC11 device’s 6-leaded small outline package (SOP).

MPI optimistically looks at LED production orders during from 4Q10 to 1Q11

A leader of MJC Probe (MPI) reported that its LED production orders had extended to 1Q11. As growing adoption of LEDs for large-size backlighting and general lighting applications, MPI expected sales of its LED-testing tools to grow in 2011, and the company thought the market penetration rate for LED applications in the global lighting market would reach 50% by 2015.

Bentleyville’s Only Steel Fabricated Christmas Tree with LED Lights

Bentleyville is building what will become the only steel fabricated Christmas tree in the United States standing over 120 feet tall. And rolls of LED lights will be wrapped around the tree as crews finished each section. The 50,000 LED lights are expected to use 37 amps of power. It’s said that over 200,000 people attended the Bentleyville Tour of Lights in 2009, and this year, crews are expecting the tree will draw an even bigger turnout.

Benicia Acquired $146,000 from DOE for LED Street Lights Replacement

Benicia has acquired $146,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program to retrofit 160 streetlights with LED and induction technology fixtures. The new lights will be installed on First Street and Military West between First and West 13th streets. The project is expected to be completed in 2011 spring, following a bidding process to award a construction contract.
