Cree announced that the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has agreed to open an investigation into unfair trade practices by Feit Electric Company, Inc. and its Asian supplier, Unity Opto Technology Co., Ltd. The investigation includes allegations of infringement of 8 Cree patents related to LED lighting and Feit’s false and misleading advertising claims, including that certain of its products meet ENERGY STAR® specifications. The decision to open an investigation comes after Cree filed a complaint on January 12, 2015, requesting an investigation by the ITC.

The U.S. Department of Energy's CALiPER program has released Report 20.4, which is part of a series of investigations on LED PAR38 lamps. Report 20.4 focuses on lumen maintenance, chromaticity maintenance, and catastrophic failure in 32 of the Series 20 LED PAR38 lamps and eight benchmark lamps, which were monitored for nearly 14,000 hours at ambient temperatures between 44°C and 45°C. Among the findings:

It will take some time before the effects from MOCVDs and other LED chip equipment acquired in 2014 will become evident, but it is expected the new equipment will make significant contributions to this year’s revenue growth, announced Chinese LED manufacturer HC SemiTek recently in an investor relations statement.

Following leading Chinese LED package manufacturer MLS’s recent IPO announcement, a Bloomberg report estimated the company’s Chairman Sun Qinghuan will be joining the billionaire club after the IPO.

China’s leading LED package manufacturer MLS, which has earned a reputation as “price slasher” in the LED industry, recently announced it will be raising RMB 960 million (US $ 153.87 million) through a Shenzhen IPO to expand its production capacity and increase liquidity, according to a Chinese Business News reports. MLS actions indicates the LED industry is entering another industry restructure phase.

It seems Samsung Display has not quite given up on OLED TVs yet, and has no intention of letting rival compatriot LG Display become a monopoly in this sector, according to a recent Reuters report.

Transparent, conductive, and uniform Ag nanowires (NWs) were introduced to improve the optical performance of GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) by a spin-coating technique. The Ag NWs acted as a current spreading layer, exhibiting high transmittance and low sheet resistance, and ultimately leading to high performance GaN-based LEDs with an ultra large size of 5 × 5 mm2. Compared to the transmittance of conventional LEDs without Ag NWs, the relative transmittance of LEDs with Ag NWs was approximately 90% of the overall wavelength region. However, the electroluminescence (EL) intensity of LED with Ag NWs was much higher than that of conventional LEDs without Ag NWs for injection current above 45 mA. In addition, the EL full width at half maximum of LEDs with Ag NWs was much lower than that of conventional LEDs without Ag NWs. Based on these results, we believe that the enhanced optical performance of ultra large LEDs was due to an increase in the current spreading effect.

Osram Opto Semiconductors is expanding its LED product range for horticultural lighting with a new type of the well-proven Oslon SSL. In addition to the existing hyper red (660 nm) and deep blue (450 nm) versions, the high-tech company developed a far red Oslon SSL LED with a wavelength of 730 nm. For certain plants such as tomatoes, pepper or roses, it is exactly this wavelength which leads to better growth. Customers now have a better coverage of the color spectrum for their horticulture applications. The new far red Oslon SSL will be available from January 2015.
