Led by the most energy efficient LED lighting troffers on the market today*, LG Electronics USA is expanding its LED lighting presence within the U.S. market.  LG is presenting its portfolio of energy-efficient commercial lighting solutions – from new troffers to high-bays to road and street lighting solutions – at LIGHTFAIR International 2014 (booth #7202), the lighting industry trade show that opens here today.

LED lighting penetration is rapidly increasing, according to Economic Daily News. It is estimated that after LED lighting popularizes by 2017, it will be succeeded by smart lighting. Industry insiders anticipate that the prosperity period will be longer than before, with LED chip manufacturers Epistar and LED package manufacturer Everlight being the largest beneficiaries. 

Flourishing development in automotive lighting has grabbed the attention of many LED manufacturers. Last week, Taiwanese LED manufacturer Everlight announced that it has already secured orders from large European and Japanese automotive manufacturers. It is the first Taiwanese manufacturer to break out of the after-sales market and ship directly to automotive manufacturers.

LED bulb Average Selling Price (ASP) dipped slightly by 1.5% in April 2014 to US $14.7, with price decrease most evident in China, according to the latest LED bulb retail findings from LEDinside, a research subsidiary of TrendForce. Global 60W equiv. LED bulb ASP dropped 2.5% to US $20.2.

The U.S. Department of Energy's CALiPER program has released Report 21.3, which is part of a series of investigations on linear LED lamps. Report 21.3 details a set of life-cycle cost simulations that compared a two-lamp troffer using LED lamps (38W total power draw) or fluorescent lamps (51W total power draw) over a 10-year study period. The LED lamps were assumed to produce similar light output and light distribution when mounted inside the troffers, an assumption that was reasonable for less than a third of the products tested for this series of reports, but that may be more widely achievable in the near future, as SSL products advance.

Flexible OLED could be an integral part of wearable devices in the near future, according to plastic electronic specialist Plastic Logic. The company will exhibit the world’s first fully organic transistor at the SID Display Week this week in California. 

Contrary to popular marketing notions, a recent poll by Leapfrog Lighting, places quality as a highly significant factor in choice of LED bulbs. With 82.5% of business owners rating quality of light as extremely important or important, energy savings, environmental benefits and lower cost of ownership are no longer the decisive factors in a buying decision. Only 5.8% of those polled indicated quality was "not important."

The new branch office for the National Bank of Arizona in Prescott is the first in the state to install new energy efficient LED lighting and HVAC technologies from LG Electronics and advanced control systems from Daintree Networks, Inc.
