General Illumination Takes Centre Stage at EuroLED

If you want to quickly assess the health of an industry, one option is to take a brief look at the progression of its conferences. In the case of the euroLED conference series and the sector of the III V industry that it supports, this approach provides an excellent overview of current trends. The inaugural euroLED meeting held in the UK back in the early noughties was a very small affair, but over the years the conference has moved to larger premises, first to the National Motor Museum in Birmingham and more recently to the Ricoh Arena, part of a complex that is also ho...

New LED Entrants in China to Boost 2012 Outlook

IMS Research has released the MOCVD chapters of its 300-page “Quarterly LED Supply and Demand Report” which reveals significant shifts in MOCVD adoption for LED manufacturing. In June, the previous quarter’s report lowered the annual GaN LED revenue growth forecast to just 4% to $8.7B on rapid 1H’11 ASP reductions from a rising surplus, slower LCD and LED panel growth and the lighting market not yet cost competitive. With growth slowing, margins shrinking, the oversupply worsening and credit in China tighter than expected,...

Colour Rendering from LED Lighting

Start to look into LED lighting and quickly it becomes obvious that one type of LED will not suit all situations. After a while, you get sophisticated enough to take colour-rendering index (CRI) and colour temperature into account, and even then you are only about halfway down the check list. A little colour science There is no scientific definition of white light because, like beauty, white is in the eye of the beholder. However, everybody agrees that daylight is white, or at least a type of white, and daylight comes from the sun - a ball of gas with a surface temp...
