It's reported Purdue's Professor Sands and a graduate researcher man the reactor, which produces the first blue LEDs based on a silicon process. The new LEDs promise greater efficiency, longer lifetimes, and much lower costs. Purdue research have developed new production methods which will cut LED lighting costs to about a twentieth of current expenses.

It's reported that Asif Anwar, Director of the Strategy Analytics GaAs and Compound Technologies Service, will be presenting his paper, "LED Device and Material Market Trends," at the 5th China International Forum on Solid State Lighting conference on July 24 - 26, in Shenzhen, China. He will outline the market prospects for LEDs and highlight future substrate market trends that will have an impact on LED markets.

During the industry's traditional peak season in the second quarter, LED demand did not surge, however, LED makers are expected to see improved gross margins in the second quarter as compared to the slow season in the first quarter.It’s said that affected by weak demand for LEDs used in backlight units for small- to medium-size LCD panels, Unity Opto Technology saw its revenues in the second quarter drop 11% sequentially, but its gross margins are expected to increase to around 16-17%, up from 10% in the first quarter.

The technique overcomes prohibitive costs of current LED technology by building the diodes on low cost silicon wafers, instead of currently-used sapphire. In the past, high power LED lighting has been one of the technical revolutions. Filament lamps have reigned supreme for something like a century, are now being replaced by LEDs.But using high power LEDs has never been as simple as using filament lamps - what with the need to control current by a dropping resistor or a DC:DC converter. for example, take the replacement of an interior car light. By the time you source a LED of sufficient intensity and organize and position a dropping resistor, it's a project that very rapidly loses appeal!

Recently, Toshiba released new LED lights that are shaped like midget reflector and beam lamps.LED-based midget Reflector and Beam Lamps can be used with the existing light bulb sockets without any special adjustment because they have the E26 base. The new lights use Nichia Corp's LED. The light source comes in two types, with one incandescent and the other white. They are expected to be used as the illumination lighting for signboards, facilities and shops.

It's reported that KINCROME Australia has released two ranges of workshop lights using fluorescent and cordless LED technology.The "Fluoro" range includes four 240V fluorescent lamps, three of which have five metre leads and one with a 15m lead.The units differ in wattages, ranging from 13W up to the 26W featured by a twin fluorescent tube lamp. According to the company, the lamps have high impact shatterproof bodies, drop-resistant lenses, protective bumpers and ergonomic grip handles.

Recently, Japanese LED maker Nichia Corporation has filed a patent infringement lawsuit in Germany against its Korean rival, Seoul Semiconductor Co. Ltd. The lawsuit claims that Seoul's Acriche series white LED product infringes the Nichia patent EP(DE)622858. Seoul's German subsidiary, Seoul Semiconductor Europe GmbH, and its German distributor, Conrad Electronic SE, are also listed in the lawsuit, which seeks injunctive relief and compensation for damages.

Today, Toshiba will unveil of a new full color LED display, Toshiba Vision Times Square, that supports over one billion colors and high definition resolution.
