TrendForce 2022 Infrared Sensing Application Market and Branding Strategies- Open up New Horizons

According to TrendForce 2022 Infrared Sensing Application Market and Branding Strategies, various crucial topics—such as metaverse, ADAS / autonomous driving, in-cabin sensing- DMS / OMS, and industrial automation—will rise rapidly in 2022 as brand manufacturers implement their strategies and plans. The applications as follows will all witness higher-than-expected growth momentum!

Metaverse- Eye Tracking and 3D Sensing

In response to the rise of metaverse in 2021, brand manufacturers become more active in developing AR and VR products. The foveated rendering in eye tracking can create real, intuitive visual experiences, reduce motion sickness levels, strengthen immersion, and enable straightforward operation. 3D sensing combined with 5G transmission and AR function with gesture control to realize interactive augmented reality will indeed create big opportunities.

Under Display Proximity Sensor

According to TrendForce survey, brand manufacturers are planning to introduce SWIR light source into under display proximity sensor, which mainly aim to reduce sunlight / ambient light interference, improve transmission rate and screen-to-body ratio and reduce eye safety issue, as well as presence of white spots and screen burn-in.

Bio-Sensing- Photoplethysmography (PPG)

SWIR wavelengths range from 1,050-2,500 nm, which encompasses the optical properties of compounds such as water, sugar, and alcohol. While SWIR technologies gradually mature, and prices begin to reach feasible levels, AirPods 3 successfully introduce PPG (photoplethysmography) technology to improve in-ear detection mechanism based on skin-detect sensors.

With improving algorithm, wearable devices are increasingly likely to feature PPG-based bio-sensing functions, which can measure not only heart rate and blood oxygen levels, but also other variables including body hydration as well as blood glucose, blood lipid, and blood alcohol levels in the future. Therefore, the said bio-sensing advances can contribute to brand manufacturers with their value-added products.

In-Cabin Sensing- Driver Monitoring System (DMS) / Occupant Monitoring System (OMS)

Since 2020, the Euro NCAP has mandated DMS for a five-star rating. Starting 2022, vehicles with child presence detection systems will be awarded. The European Union also plans to mandate DMS in new cars in 2022. The US National Transportation Safety Board also recommends installing a DMS to partially autonomous vehicles. China’s national standard “Taxonomy of Driving Automation for Motor Vehicles” stipulates that vehicles with autonomous driving Level 3 must be able to recognize when it can take over driving.

Car makers following government policies will give rise to the DMS / OMS market, where system, software, and component suppliers strive to enter. DMS and OMS will be first installed in passenger and commercial logistic vehicles.

Major Car makers promoting the DMS / OMS include Audi, BMW, General Motors, Ford, Mazda, Infiniti (Nissan), Lexus (Toyota), Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, Volkswagen, Volvo, Maxus, Great Wall Motors, BORGWARD, Geely, Hyundai, Jeep, etc. In addition, Tesla has placed a DMS / OMS in the rearview mirrors of its Model Y and Model S in 2021; the system will be imported into the Model 3 in 2022. VCSEL based on indirect ToF will be applied to European car model of 2022.

ADAS / Autonomous Driving- Automotive LiDAR

The global automotive market has seen demand returns since 4Q20. However, as car makers focused more on developing new energy cars and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), development of the LiDAR market throughout 2021 has been lower than expected. The existing advanced models, including those from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Honda have been equipped with Valeo LiDAR sensors. BMW has adopted the LiDAR products of Innoviz to its iNEXT series. Lexus has applied the LiDAR sensors of Continental and Denso to its autonomous driving L3. Car companies plan to continue using LiDAR technologies to achieve autonomous driving (e.g., highway driving) in 2022 for improved safety and autonomous emergency braking (AEB) performance. For example, Volvo plans to apply long-range LiDAR technologies to highway driving, while Hyundai will announce the Genesis G90 featuring LiDAR. Further, Chinese new energy car makers tend to be more active in applying LiDAR to ADAS and autonomous driving L3. LiDAR sensors are considered indispensable for autonomous driving L4 and L5. Accordingly, automotive players have been striving for LiDAR use to build comprehensive databases and enhance sensor accuracy.

Automotive LiDAR sensors are also installed in autonomous busses, Robo-taxies, and autonomous trucks featuring autonomous driving L4 and L5. These vehicles are developed for road shuttle and point-to-point transport to overcome labor shortages as well as reduce labor and transport costs. Major manufacturers of Robo-taxies include Waymo, Cruise, and Argo AI. Waymo provides autonomous driving services mainly in Phoenix. As the COVID-19 outbreak slows down, the Alphabet subsidiary has resumed Robo-taxi services, aiming to make San Francisco its second largest market by 2025. Cruise has been recently approved to run Robo-taxies across California, whereas Argo AI intends to launch Robo-taxi services in Miami and Austin of Texas.

Industrial Automation- Industrial LiDAR and Hyperspectral Imaging

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the industrial automation sector was sluggish in 2020, forcing most vendors to delay their development projects for budget concerns. After the pandemic began slowing down in 2021, the industrial market has seen demand recoveries. Considering labor shortage problems, the development of industrial automation accelerated between 2Q and 3Q21 in European, American, and Chinese markets. As e-commerce continues to boom, e-commerce and delivery companies—in order to achieve more cost-effective, efficient last mile delivery—are demanding more for delivery robots powered by automatic navigation and decision-making systems.

Hyperspectral imaging is performed using SWIR LED as the light source with InGaAs cameras. The imaging approach enables sorting and examining different materials according to their optical properties with detection accuracy and speed that are far beyond the human vision. Hyperspectral imaging can help improve automation quality to a great extent and reduce production line workforce. Following technological advances and price reduction, the SWIR LED market will become promising in the coming years.

TrendForce 2022 Infrared Sensing Application Market and Branding Strategies focuses on four major application markets, namely consumer electronics, in-cabin sensing (DMS and OMS), ADAS / autonomous driving, and industrial automation. Further, TrendForce thoroughly investigated the market opportunities, techniques, and price trends of SWIR as the technology becomes increasingly mature.

TrendForce analyzed the infrared sensing market scale, opportunities, challenges, product specification and price, and supply chains via brand manufacturer strategies. TrendForce aims to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of marketing and sales in the infrared sensing market.
