General Electric (GE) is exiting its century-old lighting business with its announcement on May 27, 2020 that it has signed a definite agreement to sell the lighting unit to Savant System. Financial details of the deal was not revealed by both parties. Based on the agreement, Savant System will continue use the GE brand and keep headquarter in Cleveland, Ohio. General Electric (GE) announced its plan to restructure the company in November 2017 with the intention to cut off its lighting business and to narrow the focus on three sectors, aviation, power and renewable businesses. 

Chinese lighting companies MLS Co. and Foshan Electrical and Lighting Co. are seeking financial supports for bidding GE’s asset, Reuters reported. The deal is potentially to amount at USD 1 billion, according to sources in the industry.

According to the latest report from LEDinside, a division of the market research firm TrendForce, 2018 Industrial Lighting and High / Low Bay Light Market Report, the global LED industrial lighting market increases significantly as the stability and price of LED products are approaching the traditional metal-halide lamp. Europe takes up the largest market share in 2018, followed by China and America. In view of shipments, Chinese market accounts for the greatest proportion, mainly because the products from Chinese market are in lower prices. The global industrial lighting market scale comes to USD 3.934 billion in 2018, and expected to reach USD 5.687 billion in 2022, with CAGR of 10% during 2018-2022.

Walmart announced results of an extensive lighting program with Current, powered by GE at the National Retail Federation’s Big Show. Nichia announced Tuesday that it had won another LED patent infringement suit against Everlight in Dusseldorf Court in Germany, and filed another four patent suits against Chinese LCD TV manufacturer TCL Multimedia Technology Holdings, LED retailers Lowe’s Hone, and LED distributors L G Sourcing and Feit Electric. Feit Electric is the most recent plaintiff to be included in the Japanese LED manufacturers list of companies where it is seeking for injunctions that prohibit the sale and distribution of infringing products, but there has not been much changes in its patent suit strategy. The company is following a trajectory similar to 2016 in its patent suit approach. LEDinside also estimates Feit Electric might cave into arriving a settlement in a similar way that it did with Cree in 2016.

GE, the world’s leading digital industrial company, executed on its agreement to acquire a 75% stake in Concept Laser of Germany. The agreement, announced in late October, allows for GE to take full ownership over the next several years.
