AU Optronics Corp. today announced that its new cutting-edge innovative display technologies will be exhibited at FPD International 2009, held in Yokohama Japan, from Oct. 28-30.

Tyntek Corp, a Taiwan-based LED chipmaker, recently said it is seeking to acquire its local rival Ubilux to expand its output of LEDs for panel backlighting, according to an article on Taipei Times. The acquisition will make Tyntek Taiwan’s third-largest LED chipmaker, after Epistar Corp and Optotech Corp, the report said.

Lite-On Technology and Everlight Electronics, two of the major LED providers based in Taiwan, are reportedly to be supplying SMD LEDs to Korea’s Samsung and LG from the fourth quarter this year. The two companies will supply LEDs mainly for backlights of 46/47- and 52/55-inch TVs to the two Korean TV makers, according to the report.

Prof. Hwung-Hweng Hwung, the Senior Executive Vice President of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) - Taiwan, on behalf of NCKU, signed a joint venture agreement with a privately owned Taiwan Nitride Material Inc. led by its chairman Mr. H.H. Chang, for the production of aluminum nitride (AlN). Xodtec Group USA, INC. announced today it has successfully developed of a new type of LED lens supporting frame which is capable of supporting lenses and LED chips of multiple specifications. This frame should greatly reduce the cost of production and component inventory, increasing the product’s competitiveness. The frame structure gained Utility Model Patent Number: M 358248 in July from the Intellectual Property Office, Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan.

Taiwan’s leading panel maker AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) recently decided to invest NT$30 billion (US$923.08 million) to establish four LED chip factories in Taiwan in the fourth quarter this year, to meet the strong demand for LEDs used in panel backlight modules, Taiwan Economic News reports, and the facilities is planned to begin mass production in late 2010.

Owing to increasing LED backlight module shipments, Unity Opto Technology Co., a Taiwan-based LED chipmaker, expects to continue to post record high revenue in July, the Taiwan Economic News reports. According to Unity Opto chairman C.H. Wu, business of LED backlight for panels accounts for 55% of the company’s total revenue. With flooding orders, Wu said, Unity Opto’s revenues in July, August, and September are expected to continue to hit record highs.
