Taiwan fabless IC design company Princeton Technology Corp. (PTC) will showcase its LED driver and dimming controller lighting solution ICs on November 10-12, 2010 at the FPD International & Green Device Exhibition. The demonstration will include 650V multifunction electronic ballast driver ICs (PT56XX series), high power LED driver ICs (PT69XX series) for LED backlighting, and the CC driver ICs (PT67XX series) for billboard display applications.

LEDforum 2010 is a two-day event organized by LEDinside and the Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute. The agenda for the first day covers on LED components and equipment trends. In 3Q10, Epistar's consolidated revenues reached NT$5.68 billion, up 8.3% sequentially. Gross margin was 40.7%, up from 39% in 2Q. Operating income was NT$1.7 billion with operating margin of 30%. Net profit was NT$1.9 billion up 12% sequentially. For the first three quarters of 2010, Epistar consolidated revenues totaled NT$15.9 billion, gross margin 39.5%, and operating income NT$4.63 billion with 29% operating margin. Net profits were NT$4.6 billion with an EPS of NT$5.81.

Lite-On Technology (2301) reported 3Q worldwide consolidated sales of NT$31.86 billion, up 20% YoY, while posting a net profit of NT$2.53 billion with EPS of NT$1.14.

Taiwan-based LED sorting and semiconductor testing company YoungTek Electronics (YTEC) announced financial result during the time from 1Q to 3Q in 2010. Revenues reached NT$2.188 billion with an average gross margin of 43.67%, and net profits went to NT$628 million (US$20.48 million), with EPS of NT$6.58.

Wafer probe card maker MJC Probe (MPI) earned profit NT$272 million (US$8.88 million), up 56％compared to 2Q ,with NT$3.52 per share in net profits, exceeding the total for the whole first half. Gross margin reached about 44.6%, higher than previously expected by market observers. From 1Q to 3Q in 2010, the company posted net profits of NT$515 million, EPS of NT$6.67 and gross margin of 41.7%.

Veeco Instruments Inc. (Nasdaq: VECO), has announced that Epistar Corporation, headquartered in Taiwan, placed a multi-tool order for Veeco's TurboDisc(R) K465i(TM) gallium nitride (GaN) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) Systems for high volume light emitting diode (LED) production.

More and more Taiwanese display panel makers have involved in the production of AMOLED display, because of the optimistic outlooks of the market for such products. Insists on the opinion that AMOLED displays will replace TFT LCDs as the mainstream display panel for smartphones, Wintek Corp.,has switched part of its existing production lines for TFT LCDs to AMOLED displays. At present, its touch panels have contributed over 70% to the firm`s revenue, and TFT LCDs the remainder.

Lately, the president of Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI) Mr. Alcantaro Correa has led Brazil business delegation , exclusively came to visit Aeon Lighting Technology (ALT) head office in Taiwan and listened company profile presentation. As the sapphire market became stronger, Taiwan quartz components maker TXC planed to develop sapphire and other crystalline products. It is reported that the company will establish crystal growth capacity and start production in February 2011. Also, wafer slicing and sapphire substrate manufacturing is in the new crystal growth processing operations. TXC planned to invest total NT$300 million (US$9.7 million) initially, with focus on 4- and 6-inch sapphire substrates development.

Taiwan's outlying island of Kinmen has installed a new system of LED lamps for street lighting as part of the county's low carbon energy-saving efforts. As the county government was awarded a grant by the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Bureau of Energy to finance the plan, Sixty-nine automated LED lamps were installed on a section of the island's Huandao East Road, replacing the previous sodium and mercury street lamps.

As Apple announced an upgraded MacBook Air,  featuring 11.6-inch panel, it is hoped that several manufactories in Taiwan would become one of the suppliers in the supply chain for the machine, such as Foxconn Electronics, Quanta Computer, AU Optronics (AUO),Chimei Innolux (CMI) and so on.

Recently, Genesis Photonics started seting a third LED epitaxial wafer factory in the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP), which could produce 120,000 LED epitaxial wafers every month and will complete the project in 2Q 2011.

Recently, CCFL lighting maker Wellypower Optronics’3Q10 revenues made a new record. The consolidated total revenues went up NT$2.27 billion, gross profit was NT$270 million with a 12% gross margin. Also, pure income reached NT$171 million (US$5.53 million), up 694% sequentially, EPS was NT$1.01, and operating incomer was NT$142 million.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) of Taiwan, it has worked out a set of draft standards governing intelligent LED illumination management and communications, and will team up with mainland China to jointly lead LED standards.

Goldyear Industrial Ltd. will introduce its new 50W Liquid Cooling LED Stand Lamp and 16W Heat Column LED Pendant Lamp at 2011 Taiwan International Lighting Show. Founded in 1988 in Taiwan, Goldyear has been engaged in production and development of lightings and related components for over two decades.

It is reported that Taiwan and China vendors will test LED street lamps in Xiamen, Fujian Province and Guangzhou, by cross-strait standards for LED street lighting. Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) will assist to choose test sites, and two test sites have chosen, including Xiamen's Huoju Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone and line one of Guangzhou's Metro subway system.

Recently, CCFL lighting maker Wellypower Optronics reported hot cathode fluorescent lamps (HCFL) T5 light bars, in order to pay attention to consumer lighting market. Now, Wellypower had both contract manufacturing and own brand operations. Every moth, the company could produce 1.4-1.8 million units, which utilization efficiency was 70-80%, and package 120 million units, which may increase 200 million units by the end of 2010.

Taiwan BenQ launched three new 24” LED backlight monitors including a 3D model, aiming at the models at the home, business and gaming markets in Australia. This 120 Hz monitor outputs two sets of images at 6Hz which are then synchronised using 3D glasses. Native resolution is 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resulting in most output files being supported. The monitor that comes with a solid stand that slides up and down on a pole allows the display screen to be easily adjusted to a suitable height.

It's said that Taiwan silicon foundry giant Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) will license LED patents from Philips when its LED factory starts pilot production at the end of 2010. According to the company, it began the construction in March 2010, with first-phase project scheduled to be completed and tooled by the end of 2010 at a cost of around NT$5.5 billion (US$177 million). Volume production will not kick off until Q1 of 2011.
